Those of you who read MBY may have read my report on our antifouling solution for this year

It didn't work!!!

As predicted, the actual antifoul on that we painted on the props - didn't stick.
I estimate that we now only have about 25% of the paint that we applied to the props earlier this year.
OK we've had a bit of use over the last month but there were signs of it coming off after only 100 miles!!
I will try tomorrow to take some pics - they look really pretty - some patches have stuck but mostly it has all gone.
Where the paint has stuck all the layers are present but where it has come off, it has all gone.

My next plan
I was talking to jfm at the Swanwick Boat Show and he suggested a spray that someone on this forum is using.
Can't remember who he said it was.
But we will be lifting the boat in the summer again (cheap Sant Carles lifts) so I thought I'd empty a couple of cans of the stuff on our (by then) paintless props!!

Who was it?

H, there is a possibility it may have been me? If it was, then this is the stuff I used... I think jfm liked the idea of using it as it covers your nicely polished props with a clear glossy lacquer which makes them look super shiny....

..but whether its going to be any good in the med.... I await your next report. All I will say it seemed to work in the Solent for the season... no barnacles, no wormy tyre tracks, and certainly no weed... a bit of limescale and that was that... and that was from March to November.. Far far easier to apply and far cheaper and far better than Prop Shield that I used the previous 2 seasons...

Yup, it was that stuff Firefly discovered. Something like fifteen quid a can! I've put a full aerosol on each of Match 2's props 2 days before that Swanwick boatshow May 2013 and will report back later in the year.

Of course, as Match2 is currently sitting on the sodding dockside in Gandia courtesy of my least favourite shipping company Sevenbloodystar she is of course not suffering any axshull prop fouling, grrrr. Oops, sorry to go o/t; couldn't help it! :D

Sorry I didn't mention you above - I thought jfm said it was you but I wasn't sure.

Thanks for the comment
I will probably give "Firefly's" treatment the "Sant Carles Test"!!!!

Thanks both of you

Here's some of the images from my January lift out after 10 months Mike, using force4's cheapo prop paint/coating as championed by James, (Firefly) ok not spotless, but no growth to speak of. Solent waters. but we did have eighteen months of winter:D or at least, I don't recall it being particularly summerish last year! might have a bearing on little growth.

I doubt that the results from the Med will be anything like yours but I'm willing to give it a try.
Also, we used Propshield last year because we thought it would be easier to pressure wash off
The stuff mentioned above might be the same BUT EASIER TO APPLY

Hurricane, you need to think more laterally.

I had a solution for your Comms problem. Swap boats.

For the fouling problem just swap berths. Simple and free.

Now - I've solved 2 of your problems FOC, there's this problem I have. Being nagged.......

Thanks

As ever H, an effective sterngear antifoul treatment is the holy grail of Med boating so I'm interested to see if this works. Keep us informed!

SORRY FOR THE THREAD DRIFT BUT.............Hi JFM.....I think I,ve missed a step somewhere, so, why is Match on a dockside and NOT in Antibes ??

read John's build thread Steve (page 185), the shipping firm haven't been open and honest with their transportation arrangements

Hi G.....having just read that bit of "news" all credit to JFM for maintaining calm because rest assured I WOULD,NT BE !!!!!!..... sounds like the company must be run by Gordon Brown with his "now we have persuaded you to go with us, we can and will do what the hell we like"! attitude !!!!

I think i've mentioned before that i've used TK line clear antifouling on my props in the Med, and it was no better than Trilux spray, in fact i'd say it wasn't as good because there were some patches of unfouled Trilux a year later, but no unfouled patches on the TK Line bits. That said, it wasn't a very scientific test, as I only used it because the shop ran out of Trilux, and I only ever apply a/f to the props to stop them fouling in the short period between the annual haul out and the first real use of the boat, so I don't polish the props first, or prime them with anything.

I used a new shipyard this year, and without me asking they have covered all my sterngear in a pale green paint. I don't know what it is, but if it works then I can always ask them what they used.

My feeling though is that the Holy Grail still eludes us ...

Ooh, looking forward to the pale green paint test results Nick. Which shipyard?

I think at end of this year if TK and pale green etc are no good I will go back to Propspeed which properly did work, but at a crazy price (like, it would be €1000 for Match). I'll see if I can buy a tin on some black market and apply it myself in Bleumer's yard

pale green.....mmm sounds like the dregs of antifoul off a Jeanneau Merry Fisher... they are often pale green...

Chantier Naval du Port Vauban - You'd hardly know it's there as it's hidden behind Stefano's, and you have to negotiate the channel of no return with a dozen anchors waiting to take chunks out of your gel coat if you stray a few inches off course.

At the end of the channel you have to turn the boat through 90 degs in a space not much bigger than the boat so they can reach it with the crane.

Nobody speaks any English, so it can be a bit awkward to arrange extra work, although they seem to have good access to a variety of trades, and the prices are a fair bit cheaper than Bleumer. We're right on the limit of what they can handle though, so no good for Match.

Why's she stuck there, I thought it was non stop to Genoa? So still 600 miles to go to Antibes? Maybe you need a forum crew to get her there for you?
