My Silva hand held VHF is very unwell and nolonger seems to work - not bad for just over one year old.......

Any suggestions for a better quality but not too expensive replacement would be gratefully received. We really tend to only use it on flybridge so as water resistant one as possible would be useful.

Thanks

Nick

Nick,

Recently bought the new Micom M31. This is a small compact unit, it comes with charging unit for its Nicads and can take normal bateries as a backup. The unit has performed well - no complaints. £139.00, bought mine from Bluev.co.uk, came on next day delivery, great service from these people.

Hmm..Ive just bought a Silva handheld from Compass £75, waiting for it to come.
I already have an Icom H/H plus my 2m amateur handie, which also does marine,
as well as two fixed sets.
Cant help it..sorry I'm just a bit of a radio nut. I figured that for a spare disposable
set especially for dropping off the flybridge into the sea, £75 quid wasnt at all bad.
Hope it lasts more than a year though.
What has actually happened to yours..what are the symptoms, are you sure it cant be resurrected?

Have fun

Steve.

Scuse the pun Nick but this time you'll have to "SPLASH OUT" on a waterproof one, specially if ont flybridge. ICOM are good.

I've just bought an ICOM M31 which seems to be excellent although I haven't dropped it, kicked it, sprayed it with a High pressure hose or chucked a brick at it. However I am sitting in my living room in West Sussex listening to Southampton VTS which can't be bad considering the South Downs are in the way.

My only other experience of them was buying a cheap danforth last year which duly turned up in about 4 days..so seemed alright.
Ive also ordered a NASA GPS repeater for the F/B on the same internet order.
Thanks for the info, I'll keep an eye on the situation and I wont let it drag on.

Cheers
Steve.

Nick - I have an ICOM - use it while out training. Got soaked a lot today - keeps coming back for more. Been wet more times than your flybridge /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Had it for over 4 years. Seen more actio than most handhelds.

I bought an Icom M31 at ExCel to replace a ten year old SX Micro that still works well but isn't waterproof. The Icom is rather larger than the SX but feels well put together. I think that the M21 is more compact but is a lot more cash.

If you want it to work when you want -
1. Waterproof
2. Li Batteries

I currently have an Icom for occasional cockpit use / tender / marina / etc and after 2 and a half years it's only on it's second charge (admittedly it's locked in someone else's chartbox 'cos I left it behind last October!) but it will work 'out the box' again, adn again and again.

Whilst you will spend more initially .....how mujch will yo spend on flares without actually ever using them? Fire extinguishers?

Like everyone else on here (apparently /forums/images/icons/smile.gif) I, too have an Icom M31. Excellent bit of kit and can be charged off both mains or 12V. Feels solid and well put together and perfoms well. M21 is compact and bijou but I think you're just paying for dinkiness and unneccessary add-ons.

Bomb proof as well as water proof, and the Li Ion battery is just unbelievable.Worth the extra dosh over a budget version

Re: ICOM NM

Nick, I use a Simrad HT50, Would i recommend it?? NO Chance!!!!
In my own opinion, its Useless!!!!
Its been back to the factory, once cause the PTT button wouldn't work, And now 1 year old, the battery won't hold its charge...
Anyone else use Simrad?

Silva handheld radio and gps repeater now arrived...whats that 5 days?
Also an annoying little compass spongy keyring as a freebie.
Radio seems fine and good value for £80.
Its only for throwing at the lockmaster to wake him up anyway...

Steve.
