For what its worth.

I got to the Marina yesterday at 9am, and went straight to the trailer park where i hitched up a friends trailer, I'd arrange for the marina manager to help me take the boat out of the water, so by 0930 the boat is out of the water and all chalked up.
The mercruiser mechanic was booked to do its First service in the morning. So i thought just time to wash her down before he arrives.
The boat was new last year and was anti-fouled with white antifoul, And cause its in Freshwater i was told i would get 2 season easily out of it. Well what a sight, Yes it works, No growth or slime on it at all, But its changed colour, I now have a boat will a Yellow bum/forums/images/icons/crazy.gif. Someone in the marina later told me its because of the high Peat content in the water, but i don't know. So when i get round to re-doing it next time shes out i think we'll need to change the colour to something like Blue.
I washed the whole boat down and then washed and fully waxed the sterngear(as its not antifouled), then got the Autosol out to Polishup the 2 lovely looking Stainless steel props./forums/images/icons/smile.gif
By 1100hrs i had just finished all the cleaning, and the mechanic still hadn't arrived, So i left the keys with the Marina manager, and went to see a customer at Taynuilt, I arrived back at the marina about 2 hrs later and the mechanic said he was almost finished and was ready to get her back into the water to test her.
So back in she went, Fire up sounding lovely and sweet(V8 Petrol Remember), Mechanic said he was happy and was there anything else i wanted looking at, Nope everythings fine, So off he went.

Now at this point i thought i could go home and get on with painting the eaves of the house or do some more work in the garden, or anyone of the mountain of jobs needing done, Or i could go out and check the boats ok.

So quess what i chose too do,, Yip, I never done it before, so i thought "I'm taking the boat out on my Own", Except i wasn't alone, i had my first mate Harry with me.

So off we went in the glorious sunshine, out and down the Loch, Round the Loch, up the Loch, across the Loch and stopped inthe middle of the Loch where we floated for a while and had some lunch, The weather was fantastic, The boat ran beautifully and the only thing that broke the peace was the occaisional belch from Harry.
After a while we headed back to the marina, as we headed in a neighbour shouted over, Do i need a hand in? Cheers John but i've never tried it on my own before and want to see how i get on, i said. I moor stern in, And on my first attempt i wasn't quite in line, so out i came to try again, second time i lined up perfectly and was able to step straight off the boat onto the pontoon to tie her up. Goes to show, Never hash and bash, just take your time and if its not going well just go out and come back and try again, till you get it right.
After that we locked up the boat and went home, When i got home the wife said is the boat okay? I said yes, I thought to my self, "Infact it is fantastic". I don't think it really matters what kinda shape size style of boat you have, for me its just being lucky enough to have one and being out there enjoying it.

The only down side for yesterday enjoyment was i've just received a call from the Mercruiser dealer wanting to know my address to send me a bill, Total price for service £399.

I appologise for this long boring post, But i had a good day and thoroughly enjoyed myself yesterday.

Cheers for now.

Alistair.

Sounds like a great day apart from the £399 bill for 2 hours work, but boating never was cheap.

Well done on taking the boat out by yourself. It's quite nerve racking when leaving and especially coming back in as it has to be right. Congrats. The last time I went out - did it single handed for the first time and am out this weekend again! /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Was easy going out, its just the berthing you need to get right. But as they say, Practice makes Perfect.

I am off at 4.30pm straight upto the boat this afternoon till Sunday evening, On my own (Swmbo away doing a Reiki coarse). So it was good practise for me, Will have the whole weekend, just me and Harry, and he'll not be much good when it comes to berthing/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.

Have a good weekend yerself.

Cheers

Alistair..

Git! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Only reached 35knts. After all the trouble so far, sodding oil pressure guage started to be shaky, then dropped to zero. Back off, up it comes. Mechanic thought ok until I told him it rose when backing off. No bolt on oil pump, it's it the engine!! I'm awaiting his report and another big hole as could be engine lift out. B*****S!!

Apart from that, it was brilliant - a little too smooth Saturday morning - but sooo peaceful. Bring on a few more days like this pleeaassee!!

I had exactly the same problem on an old BMC Commodore last week going from Cowes to Ramsgate. We were night running and hit thick fog off the Nab tower, no problem until the oil pressure guage started doing exactly what you describe. Whenever I backed off, up it would come. The temp guage never budged however. I limped into shoreham on 1/3 throttle (about 4 knots!) and began asking people about the engine. I got responses ranging from "engine out- as oil pump is in the sump" to "shagged, mate".

I managed to sort the problem with WD40 and pliers. The spade connectors on the oil pressure sensor ( a big nut filled with plastic stuff with two contacts) were corroded and hardly attached. Whenever the revs (or any other vibration) rise, the connection was going off. This must be the case because I ran the engine afterwards for the best part of 40 hours from Shoreham to London via Dover, and the temp never budged and she never missed a beat. Since tightening and cleaning the connections it is better, b ut will only be resolved by replacing thhe sender and spade connectors.

I also checked tthe oil for level, swarf and visocity. If your oils fine, temp is fine, not sounding too "tappety", or better still check your rockers for signs of oil starvation (black dry areas). If all these are OK, its more likely the sensor than the pump. Whatever happens your oil pressure should DROP when you back off, not go up. Mine did that, but only because the vibration on the loose connection dropped with the revs.

Hope this makes you think twice before ripping your engine out!

Hi DogStar. Thanks for the info. My mechanic also thinks it's the sender too as temp stays fine (never moved - and also replaced 2 months ago). Could well be right about the vibration being the cause. It's not going to cost that much to replace the sender unit, plus will get an accurate reading with a new unit. Fingers crossed this will fix it...

Thanks once again.
