My boat is neither manky or average. So what is it?

I have a 1991 Parker 31. It’s been well looked after and I feel it’s not what one would describe as ‘manky’. There’s little it has in common with AWB’s either really. Do we need another abbreviation in addition to the ubiquitous MAB and AWB? If nothing else it’ll give us all 50% more to argue about.

Missing Link Boat?
Neither Here nor There Boat?
In-betweener Boat?

...or should I just lump myself in with the MAB crowd? It rankles somewhat if so, it’s got an aft cabin dagnabit!

I'm sure AWB owners don't like to think of their own particular boat as 'average', but what's the point of a gentle tease if it doesn't both rankle the victim slightly and have at least some grain of truth in there?

'Manky' is down to it's condition and maintenance, even the mankiest Parker isn't 'average' or anywhere close to it.
And comparing it to an AWB is chalk & cheese.

(Sigh) In my heart of hearts, I know it. The person that came up with the abbreviation could have chosen a slightly more flattering word than ‘manky’ though. My boats got a shower, with hot and cold water and everything. I mean, come on...
 
There are always exceptions to every rule ... have a trawl through Boatshed or any other boat sales portal and there will be a recognisable trend for older, cheaper boats to be in generally worse condition than newer boats. MAB is simply a stereotype applied to older boats and is not necessarily true.

AWB is a jibe at modern boats all looking the same and having the same features - conformity to a design norm.

AWB owners know they have an AWB ... MAB owners know if they have a MAB ... and most simply accept it.

The people who seem to get most upset are the ones with pristine or well kept older boats who seem to resent being lumped in with MAB owners due to their boats age.

Perhaps we need a new acronym, "NOB" .... standing for Nice Old Boat?

Classic/Classic Plastic seem to be accepted categories in some places with varying definitions. Perhaps the smell of a boat might be a better determinant of which category it falls into? :D
 
Nearly twenty years ago we joined a rally in Falmouth on the Town marina at the same time as the RYS was having a rally. One of the most niceable things about them, apart from their flag fetishism, was that they all had one-off boats, with the exception of one who had a Moody. I think that all of us who have production boats, including me with my HR, have to admit that we have AWBs when viewed by classic owners and members of the RYS. I see MABs as any boat older than mine that doesn't aspire to be a classic.

I think there are few boats whose owners don't think of them as classic in some sense. A classic is a MAB by definition, in my reckoning.

People seem to be missing that the joke is the 'manky' bit is as much about the (pretended) prejudice in the person casting the (joking) aspersion, as in any real characteristic/condition of the boat itself. (And similarly for AWBs.)

I agree that people often miss the point of humour, especially when it is self-deprecatory, as when I describe myself as senile, which is only partly true, at least, I think so, maybe.
 
I think I may have a NOB.

The thing is, I dont want to show you my NOB in case you laugh and say that it doesn't count as a NOB. So no photos from me on this occasion.
