Whatever you think of James Dyson's products, they've paid for him to own a very nice 1930s yacht...

...300ft long, 36ft beam, 2000 tonnes...and she only has a pair of 200hp engines, giving her 16 knots!

I can't think of another vessel so easily driven, without being a weirdly quirky design.

How appropriate for someone whose fame is in fluid dynamics! Long and thin - goes fast, but I bet she rolls a bit in a seaway. Probably worth hoisting a steadying sail now and then. Yes, I'm jealous.

Methinks someone's left a zero off the Hp of those engines. No way could 400Hp shift that at 16Kts, it's the size of a frigate!

16 kts is a 1:1ratio between speed & the square root of 256ft (so 44 ft for overhangs). So not pushing it.

Wondering what the torque numbers are, & the size of the prop(s). Is she still steam powered? Steam can famously drive very big wheels.

wikipedia says 2 x 200hp are diesels replacing the steam engines.

The main engine of the yacht produces 2200 horse power (or 1619 kilowatts). She is fitted with 4 engines. The total power for the boat is therefore 8800 HP

Never trust Wikipedia...

Nahlin spent about a week in the Dart about 3 years ago on her first outing after her re-fit. She is still the most beautiful vessel I've had the pleasure of setting eyes upon.

I wouldn't say ostentatious (or perhaps I would be ostentatious too, if I had the wherewithal) but I can't see the fun in buying a boat that I can't sail myself.
