Has anyone used these batteries? I am planning to replace our2x 6 yo house batteries (105 ah) later this year and had a reasonable quote from a place in Gocek They appear to be manufactured in Turkey, and seem to be widely used. I would appreciate feedback from any users . Thanks

Just fitted two recently. We only have a low power requirement, 2x 60Ah batteries in total.
Sorry can not report back much yet as not realy put them to the test yet.
But will update in three weeks time when on boat next.

Previous batteries believed to be a good few years old, 4years at least were another Turkish brand, I forget which. But if the new ones give me a good 4 years or so then ok for me.

Oh and I got 15 TL back on each of the old ones

My info is now a bit out of date, as we lived in Turkey about 15 years ago. However, Mutlu (means happy!) are a local make of battery and were fine for the purposes I used them for (engine battery and shower pump in our beach house). I would have thought that their technology has moved on since and would be OK for use if you're not looking for a 'high tech' solution to the battery problem.

JAMES ,

How did you fare with your Mutlu batteries . I have been looking at them and also Povver batteries to replace all my batteries

Hi there!! No further forward as I managed to keep the old batteries going till the end of last year, but I will definitely have to buy new ones when I go out to Turkey in the spring.
Have you any suggestions? Where are you based?

We fitted 5 x 105A Mutlu batteries in 2008 and they are still holding their charge well but we do not have high power needs i.e no frig. Just computer and self steering. We liveaboard most of the year and only fitted 64W flexible solar panels last year to keep them topped up. If you have a frig etc. we were advised to go for the Delphi batteries instead - more expensive but apparently hold their charge better with high loads (I think they're gel). You can get them also in Bodrum or Marmaris. Our long term liveaboard friend swears by them (Delphi).

Thanks Cassie,I had looked at Delphi as well as that's what we have on the boat just now...at 6 years old they have done well, but showing their age a bit now.
Any idea where in Bodrum I can get them? Ta

Marine , electrical and electronics Bible cautiions about Gel Cell batteries as follows

1 over voltage intolerance 13.8 V normal and abs max 14.2V
2 Cant tolerate any equalising charge
3 Although higher charge rate than lead acid deepcycly battery ther e is aproblem of ataining full charge as no fast charge devices can be used a longer engine run time required for complete recharging
Cycle life
A quality deep cycle lead acid battery can have a life exceeding 2500 cycles to 50% but a gel cell has only alife of 800 to 1000 cycles . Book considered Gel cells not suited to serious offshore cruising .

Cost Also cost up to 50% more

Charging - while Gel will accept 30 to 40% greater current they are restricted in voltage levels required so can tuse fast charging

Gell cells ideally suited for Short charge periods - week end , harbour or river cruising
if unattended gell cell is viable proposition as has low dischage rates and is less prone to the problems of deep cycle batteries . if left with small solar panel they wil recoup annual cost of replacing deep cycle batteries by a few seasons

Brought 3 105 amp 12 volt june 2009 just having them replaced
we are quite hard on the batteries with fridge and freezer but was having to
run genny or engine every day as they would not hold there charge
still under garantee so will advise what happens
have just fitted 4x6 volt trojans T105s
brought in Istanbul at a good price

Are you quite sure about that? Battery guarantees are often only against faulty manufacture. I certainly wouldn't guarantee a battery (not that I sell them) against 20 months 'hard' use over which I had absolutely no control.

Mutlu or not?

We use Delco batteries on our charter fleet. Mutlu is large Turkish brand, but not the best product.

On my own boat I use Trojan batteries and expect (and get) in excess of 10 years from them. They can be discharged up to 80% I read, but I never discharge that deeply. A good alternator smart controller like an Adverc will repay its investment with a vastly improved battery life, to say nothing of the effective increase in capacity you will gain . Trojan are now available in Marmaris. let me know if you need more info.

Expect to (locally) pay between 1 and 2 € per amphour of capacity depending on brand.
