Must visit/see places in the Solent

On top of pervious suggestions - Hurst Castle is definatley worth a visit (inside) if you like your history and old stuff, small ferry from Kehaven or moor in the south of the river and take the dinghy from anywhere in Keyhaven up to the w/taxi pontoon.

Dinner anchored in Alum bay is always nice on a calm sunset with a view of the needles.

The pub (can't remember the name - Gunn?) a short walk from the jetty in Newtown at High water is a good visit.

I'd also plan a day sailing around "the back" too...

Old harry and Swanage are worth a visit if your heading to Poole also.

Fresh fish to be had too if you bring a set of feathers.

Edit:
As JHR below the pubs the New Inn...

The Lymington pool is closed indefinitely due to health & safety concerns ! In 35 years of visiting Lymington I can't recall an accident at this pool, my son used to love it when he was a little lad, now 28 and not so little ! Visit the LTSC for a beer and some excellent grub; you can sit outside and view the pool.

With a boat full of blokes your number one priority should be the folly on Saturday night. All can make complete fools of themselves along with everyone else. After that everything else will be an anti climax. As it's the isle wight festival this weekend you can then jump in your tender on Sunday and amble up the medina, anchore or raft and listen to the music

Bembridge, beaulieu, newtown creek, yarmouth, lymington and hurst castle are probably the only other places worth making a point to visit. There are few nice bays along the way to stop off for lunch.

Not mentioned so far I dont think, apologies if I've missed it, but one on my list of places to visit one day is Osborne House, Queen Vic's old pad. Short bus ride or even walk from East Cowes.
Inflatable lifeboat place at Cowes?

Other places Sealife Centre,
Beaulieu + Motor Museum, other places around Beaulieu river too.

Carisbrooke Castle from Newport. Also small boat museum at Newport.

Round the Island bus trip if weather is bad Hop on off off system IIRC. Marginally more scary than sailing round the island in bad weather.

Alum bay

You need a month to visit the Solent, but hurry they could shut the whole place on H&S grounds.

If the weather's nice, would highly recommend a walk south along the river from Yarmouth - beautiful & very peaceful, with a nice pub at the end, & you can come back along the other bank. (Maps free from the harbour office.)

[/ QUOTE ] At HW can also take the dinghy up the river as far as you can go. Short walk then to Red Lion in Freshwater

Forgot to mention... I've arranged a little surprise for you.

5. Cancel this LNTM on completion of the display.

Done this - very pleasant. Try and time it so you row up river with the tide, spend an hour or two in the pub and row back on the ebb. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh the Queen's English. Now I have a vision of the local A&E department overrun with yachtsmen suffering from fireworks embedded in their lug holes.

Hang a right as soon as you get through the channel & don't cut the corner. there are 3 x green bouys. Take all of them to port.

?? On the way in?

Ahah, that's just the kind of advice we like to see as peeps come into Keyhaven /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seriously, Keyhaven and Hurst Castle are must sees. Just be a tad circumspect if the wind is in the NE as Hurst Roads cuts up quite badly then otherwise Keyhaven River is accessible HW +/-4 or it is for us drawing 1.9m. Anchor just inside the mouth or pick up a vacant buoy, these are all private but if any are free, espeically at weekends you can sit to one. The HM will charge you a tenner or tell you to move if he knows that tehe owners will be returning.

Thanks for that. I have been thinking about going into Keyhaven for some time and it's useful. Are the moorings near to where I've seen mention of barbecueing?
