Every new boat seems to have increasingly high quality sound systems (and DVD, Tv etc for that matter) but are these meant to be just for relaxing with beers in the evening? Do you listen to music whilst you sail and if so what? I always thought a bit of Wagner would be fun (a la Apocalypse Now) but I don't have any so haven't done that. Does it depend on the boat - I have a friend whose father has a Grand Banks and they just listen to laid back stuff when sailing but it doesn't really fit when doing 35 knts. Plus it needs to be loud to be heard over the engines on mine! Any suggestions for good sailing music then?

Depends on weather ..

Ghosting along soething nice and peaceful, then the other night I sailed down the Alderney race (18.8 knots over the ground), flat sea, 35 knots of wind over the deck and Springsteen blasting....

But (Oops my English master would have caned me for that!) why are you guys interested in raggie stuff? When I had a Nelson it wasnt worth putting anything on as the background noise of the engines dominated everything.

Yes doesn't it drive you mad? Every non boater that comes on board, at some stage in the first half hour or so, they start singing, bloody Sailing.

Or worse...A life on the Ocean waves.

And always out of tune with me too.

Or if it's evening time, there's normally some pillock who'll give a rendition of "Moon River".

The Fairline Holiday mob are by far the worst though. They always do the Cliff Richards song........."We're all going on a........ Fairline Holiday" .

eh? what awful rubbish. I had to check if i was on MBC!

Extended ATB 9pm etc whislt running, william tell overture whilst chasing.

This season's songsters were Kylie, then Back Yard Dog and Elvis.

As always, close manoevering in port requires "Naked Gun" theme and possibly anything 007

Late at night it's time to turn to the classics, and we had a nice open air late night concert comprising beethoven, then all of the Brandenburg concertos at top whack, followed by any Mozart from 1pm. Nobody dare tell tell you "turn down that racket".

A late-night tape or dvd of Sailing by in any foreign port is g'teed to get question as to how the hell you get radio 4...

If we're going fast young Sam likes to play Ride of the Valkyries. I like Emerson Lake and Palmer, Fanfare for the Common Man.

Slow romantic cruising - Paul Weller, You Do Something To Me
