I've got one of those TriPath Class T amps - brilliant for the price (although there are nicer cases available than that) running into some Eltax Mini Monitors from Richer Sounds. Total cost, about £30.

I did modify the case to have another board inside it which regulated to 10v, with a range of nice de-coupling capacitors on the output and a rotary switch to choose the audio input required.

Sounds ideal for when I come to replace my dead one - I was planning to build it into a nicer home-made case anyway. I can solder OK, but don't really know anything about designing circuits. Any chance you could list the parts you used?

You did much better than me then. On the dutch number? Admittedly only tried that once due to call costs but tried the contact form on the web site many times. I gathered from the dealer that I wasn't the only one finding it impossible to talk to Fusion.

I do suspect I'm in the minority being driven nuts by albums on repeat :-)

I just got a Fusion MS-RA radio.

Will play over usb from my phone (and charge the phone too) has AM FM and also VHF receiver. It also has line out for L+R + Sub out + Line in.

Has a decent DC-DC power supply so that it will operate from 8.5-16v (personally tested) and also draws about 400Ma idle (depending on screen brightness)

I looked around for radios, this is the only few imo that is suitable to have the 'marine' tag on it.

I'd highly rate it. Oh it cost me £150 from SIBS too.

Right, if I want to play music but have the VHF automatically able to cut across it, do I need to get one of those Fusion thingmabobs? Or is there something you can do on the cheap when you wire in an external speaker?

probably best with an external speaker. The fusion has a 'Tel' input which mutes the radio if it senses a voltage on the 'tel' wire. However, i doubt most radios have an output for this? I've not looked into that.
 
I had same problem and was looking at installing a Fusion plus speakers but just before parting with a shed load of cash I bought one of these to give it a try as a really cheap alternative:

Good heavy solid base sits on chart table, rechargeable or can use AA batteries and lasts for well over 12hrs, remote to change ipod tracks and volume from cockpit..pretty decent sound with good reviews,,,,,really happy the sound quality and price...instant solution.

That and my portable Sony radio ...I have everything I need

I got a cheap & nasty used car radio (with a 3.5mm aux socket) for £20 quid. That, and some cockpit speakers - mounted in the transom locker pointing forwards - with some IKEA 40p plastic cereal bowls epoxyed on the back† works well. Don't forget the waterproof DPDT switch to kill the sound when required.

I'm /slightly/ proud of the wooden bracket I laminated, carved & varnished - think of those h/b compass holding teak brackets† - to hold the iPod itself at the top of the companionway, just under the hatch slides. I'll try to get some pictures sometime.

† I speet on the chanders selling the same thing for £15-$20 each - you know who you are.

I heard tale of an X-channel JOG race where someone thought George Michael CD was a good ideaw - alas the wind & sea got up as night fell, and many crew felt ill, and nobody quite felt able to go down below to stop it until they arrived at Deauville - after 6 hours of repeat ;->

I still have memories of going on a ski trip with my parents on a coach that only seemed to have one music video which seemed to play none stop....Phil Collins

To this day I can't hear "you can't hurry love" without wanting to throttle Mr Collins. I thought this was due to my experience on that coach at a young age, but my mate assures me that when he hears Phil Collins he wants to throttle him too :D

Damn, I paid £1 each for Asda cereal bowls top use as speaker backs. They do come in a very attractive fake bamboo finish, though.

The first stereo we got wouldn't tune into the radio so went back via mailspeed, the second one would switch off when I pressed the menu button so I phoned Fusion up. I spoke to someone and they brought the new improved version of the stereo to the London boatshow and just swapped them over there and then. The new stereo has worked perfectly ever since.

So much so that until you mentioned it I'd forgotten the trouble we had at the start.:rolleyes:

I've got the Fusion (200 series I believe) too and for the iPod part I'm very happy with it. I'm not sure what I did, but I managed to switch off the auto-repeat. It just plays an album and it stops.
It's the radio reception I'm not too happy about. It seem quite dodgy with very little stations (on FM) that it will receive. On the other hand I'm not sure how much of an antenna is required. The one now in place is quite modest.
