It is reported that John Margerson's 'Muffin' was dismasted by seas close to Terceira, and is last reported about 5nm from port, presumably under engine.

I see from the SPOT website that John and Muffin have arrived safely in Praia de Vittoria - probably enjoying a well earned cold beer (or two!). What bad luck to lose the rig so near the finish, but it's good to know he's safe.

If correct then that was a quick crossing !! - I hope he is well.

From the man himself at 071824A today....

hi everyone -have I got the wrong island?? Have been here 8 hrs and nobody else here.

Hit a bit of rough weather on night of 5th, in fact it had been on the wind all the time - often strong.

All the time I thought its just a summer puff and will only last 5 hrs and I was right and wind went down to 6 or 7 at dawn on the 6th. Unfortunately the waves hung around, but there was not too much banging, as I had 30% jib and 3 reefs in main and going 4kts into it.

I had just decided to sit on the heads (first chance in 48hrs) when the boat hit a big wave, flew into the air and came down with an enormous bang, so big that it snapped the top of mast off. (did wonders for my constitution, too)

It wasn't a lot of fun tidying up the deck for 5 hrs, and quite terrifying to be in such a remote area - but we live to have more fun. Nice and sunny here today, had a very good lunch but I need some company.

Hope everyone else makes it safely

Cheers

John
