Moving of my new boat and all the worries

Perfectly normal to be apprehensive especially with a new boat.

Our first trip was from Southampton to Brixham after 4 days of ownership, 2 miles from Brixham the power steering pump belt failed = very nervous skipper.

Each time we go out I always (wrongly ) worry.

Sounds like you have planned well.

Hope all goes well and you enjoy the trip

I'm moving our new (to us) yacht later this month to our new marina, about a four hour trip. Not having sailed for several years (had mobos in between) I'm taking a couple of round the world sailors with me. Can't be too careful..........!

So how was the passage today?
Thought i saw you passing Stokes Bay about 3pm this afternoon (at quite a rate of knots)

That may well of been us, as we would of been going past it at about that time :encouragement: Were we really going that fast it felt like nothing except for the odd slamming of a wave.

Well the move went well, and thought I would write and tell you guys how it went.

As per normal I was running late in the morning So did not get to the marina until about 1130 was planning on getting there for 1030. Of course this then made everything a bit rushed and I did not get everything done that I wanted to. After fluffing around we eventually got of the quay about 1230 and went to refuel this was where the fun started, The wind was coming from the wrong side for me, as I had to park Starboard side on, crew not knowing what they had to do as they have no boating experience, so its fair to say we came very close to a number of boats, with some backing and forward and the help from the guys at the station who gave us a hand and pulled us on (note to self, get some practice in on pontoon bashing) Off we then set having missed the bridge opening times, I thought lets go under them we will fit, well we did easily on the first, the second one was very close, " are we OK" I say? Reply, "Yes, yes, yes, yes, OK, its going to be close" as we go under the spotter goes "F!@k that's close" However we did get under it with about 2" to spare apparently, I'm Pleased I did not see that. And off we set to our first WPT which is at Buoy no1 at the start of Poole channel, And of we set at 74c for 41 minutes at 19 knots, sea is a OK verging on being rough but not quite, the visibility is OK but again not great. We slam into a few waves, and then it happens, the GPS fall of stand, and we lose signal, and that's it gone for rest of trip, luckily I have navionics on my phone which is running well and we use that and my passage plan for the rest of way, one small concern was when we appeared to suffer a loss of power for 20 seconds, but think it was just conditions all against us at that time as it picked back up and was fine for rest of journey. I managed to get soaked a few times slamming into waves with my head peering over the top and through the canopy gap, but it was all part of the experience. The route worked well and we hit the relevant places when we should have, even at the correct times. Coming into Portsmouth was OK I just hugged those Port markers and in we went. Weather was F4/5 getting better, and the point that was made earlier about sea state being better in Solent than outside is so true almost a different sea, Had a few issues parking at the marina, again (note to self get some pontoon bashing time in) and lack of experience in the crew, however we got it parked, with no damage and all tied up safe and sound, just not in the berth I was originally aiming for  Overall it was a good day, nerve racking but good I have my first solo planned passage of about 50nm under my belt it went well and now its time to get to know where everything is. get plenty of time in going to and from pontoons and teach my son's what to do when coming along side etc. Just need to get it hooked up to the electrics and spend a few hours and days understanding how everything works, And then get plenty of hours in enjoying my new expensive toy.

PS thanks for all you help guys/gals cant wait to meet you all on the water.

PPS need top work out how to get photo's on here, done it once must learn to do it again.

PPPS Must get some pontoon bashing in.

Congrats Lionelz- job done bet you sunk a few drams of rum once berthed!!. Just one thought about all the meticulous planning around equipment. charts, filters etc next time set an alarm clock and save yourself a lot of stress. Maybe its me but I find I make mistakes much more readily when I am rushing and when I get that way it rubs off on others. Knowing this I try to be hours earlier for a trip than I need to be be and am happy to wait about and leisurely do the checks etc Do I presume the tide was rising so that lost hour made it a close shave under the 2nd bridge?

Well done anyway.. a great accomplishment and I enjoyed the read.

cheers

Mike

Great feeling in't it?! Nerve wracking yes but such a great personal achievement. Might be worth investing in a competent crew course for your lads?. It'll make future passages much more enjoyable if you all have faith in others knowledge and competency.

Congratulations - being safely docked at your home berth feels very nice!

Sounds like an excellent first passage to complete. Plenty of time now to learn all the boat's systems and get used to how she handles.

Unfortunately I was waiting on there people. But your point is very well taken and agree with the mistake issue. Tide was on the ebb so it was getting better for us as time went on so delay was fine

Never ever be afraid to call it off.If you are not happy with anything ...Just say no, you are in charge not your crew !
As time goes on you will find it easier to decide not to go,...so things do get simpler as you get more experience. :)
