Moving dsc radio from boat to boat

It could be a problem. Each ships licence is given a uniques MMSI number, which is subsequently entered into the VHF. Presumably to prevent accidental deletion, this number cannot be altered by the user, so you can't change it when moving the set to a second, or third boat.

It wouldn't prevent you from using non-DSC functions on another boat, but if you send a DSC emergency call, the rescuers will be looking for the wrong boat!

Can't the licencing authority change the details on the registration.

I am changing from one catamaran to another of simalar size, but a different name.

No, presmably to avoid the possibility of errors in registration the MMSI stays with the boat. Either the dealer or the manufacturer can reset the radio so you can input the new MMSI - I believe with an ICOM, they charge around £40.

The MMSI number is part of the official identification of the boat along with
the name , make and other boat details. This will also include the official number or SSR number if on the application.

It is probably easier and cheaper to reprogram the VHF than get Ofcom to transfer the number :D:D:D.

Some VHF radios allow the owner to change the MMSI, some can be done by the dealer and some need to go to the maker.

I have been through this issue when changing boats here in Mexico and had very good service from OFCOM who pointed me to my ships radio licence and the regulations. The MMSI number cannot be transferred between boats and remains with the original vessel to which it was issued, even when that vessel is transferred to different ownership. Your new vessel may already have an MMSI number and if not the one you are issued with will remain with it for life.
Your radio should be capable of accepting a change to the MMSI number for a limited number of times by the owner and after then will need to be returned to an authorised dealer for change.
I needed to return kit from Mexico to UK to get my MMSI number changed on two EPIRBS but changed the DSC VHF radio on board using the manufacturer's instructions.

As a footnote, when a vessel transfers to a different flag (my boat was sold to an American), that owner needs to register with their issuing authority and get a new MMSI number. The UK issued number remains on file and would be re-used if the vessel ever transfers back to UK registration.

Went through this last year. SH set wired up to SH chart plotter. As others have said, you can not transfer the number. Seamark Nunn wiped the MMSI for £25 and posted back to me inside of a week. No big deal really.
