I was hoping to move 14ft boat on trailer from South Coast to South Scotland, I have spent several days phoning haulage companies, and adverts most of whom didnt get back to me, only one! I cant drive the distance myself, any ideas? JBD /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Our butcher bought an RS400 dinghy on trailer at the Boat Show and got it delivered by a haulier who had an empty-load return trip from the South. Only cost him about £100.

So you can't spare the time to do it yourself! You think £600 top end is a rip off! Work out how much it would cost to tow it! Say a round trip of 800 miles (conservative return trip- what goes up, must come back), say 25 miles/gallon - that around £145 on fuel alone. Add the guy's time, lets say £20/hour for an 8 hour day, that's £160 and then a day back so another £160 - total so far £465. Then the guy has subsistence including overnight stay so that's say another £50 - subtotal £515. Then of course there is wear and tear on the vehicle. If you got an offer at most of £600 I reckon you got it cheap. Oh and the driver would be away for at least 24 hours. Get a life, do you work for that? Maybe why you can't tow a 14ft boat because you earn much more! The size of the boat is irrelevant! Jeez, people like you piss me off. You are wanting to be the rip off merchant /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Take two days holiday and do it yourself. Oh, will you need to rent a suitable tow vehicle? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hi.
Dont meen to interfere here, but I think Chart_scrubber you are been a bit harsh on James D.
Firstly he dident say he couldent drive that distance because of work commitments, he did say he would not be able to drive that distance, is it not possible there could be another reason?
Lets be fair here, if the guy can get it transported cheaper then good luck to him.
BTW do you not drive for WH Malcolm? or am I mistaken.
Cheers, Jeff.

Thanks again everyone for help. I would like to inform Chartscrubba first of all he is a Prat and secondly probably a loud mouth, I am a retired petrol station owner and I'm well aware of haulage costs wages etc It would be impossible for me to drive that distance as I am crippled with Rhumatiod Arthritis and have a bone disease so retired after 40 years in trade, boats allow me to try and get away from my pain, I dont think PBO forum is place for him! While I have sympathy for your afflications I still standby what I said in terms of you complaining about the cost. If you were in the "trade" then you know how much just the base costs are. As you said you don't expect anybody to do it for nothing - how much would you consider it's worth? The trip will take 2 days remember.

As to the use of the word prat, I avoided using personal references I just said that people like you piss me off - they still do!

Your estimates of the cost of employing a driver and vehicle to move this boat may well not be far off the mark

BUT

" Get a life, do you work for that? Maybe why you can't tow a 14ft boat because you earn much more! The size of the boat is irrelevant! Jeez, people like you piss me off. You are wanting to be the rip off merchant Take two days holiday and do it yourself. Oh, will you need to rent a suitable tow vehicle? "

Is quite inexcusable.

If you don't like being called a prat , which is defined in the Oxford dictionary as "an incompetant or stupid person" then try arsehole, which is also in the Oxford dictionary as "a stupid, irritating or contemptible person". Spot on IMHO.

An apology would be more appropriate than an attempt to defend your earlier post!

Quite agree Vic.

I was disgusted as I read ChartScrubba's post... definitely shouldn't be tolerated in the forums!!

I do hope that James finds himself a good deal.... just like the rest of us would want to.

James-D was using the forum on the off chance he may get help, and I'm sure if somebody here was able to they would. Thats one of the reasons this forum exists. your reply was not only contentious, it was unproductive and rude.

Hi James,

Ring round some of your local recovery operators - that is if you are now in S Scotland. They would love a load back! As a recovery operator I speak from experience!
If you are in Portsmouth area ask the locals if they want a job taking the trailer up when next they are going up.

I can post the "job" on a recovery operators forum if you like?

If you can wait till late September I'll tow it up on my way back from France for £50. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
