Re: tiggertoo

Didn't Churchill say the biggest barrier to British-US understanding was the belief that they spoke the same language? Chippy or chippie in North America means prostitute. If you want work on boats flying US or Canadian flags, call yourself carpenter, woodworker, or cabinetmaker. Perhaps Wikapedia copied from the current Oxford Dictionary of English.

Re: tiggertoo

I think you is refering to me, not Tiggertwo? I am a Joiner / Cabinet maker by trade, but Chippie will do just fine. In any event, they would soon find out that Chippie to a Brit means summat else.

It aint my fault that the Yanks are a bit confused! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Apologies to BEJASUS! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Bejasus\'s Boat

That is one nice boat, I'll bet you are really pleased with her? When you leave for the Med, you had better have a good look around her, because you might find me stowed away somewhere...............(probably in the "grogbox") /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, I meant Smiffy100 not Tiggertoo. And you're right, Chippie will do just fine.
As for boat size, if you get one big enough to hold too many things, pretty soon you don't own the things, they own you.
After reading all your posts in this thread and seeing your pictures, I agree, DO IT NOW, and I hope we meet somewhere in the canals or the Med.

Hi Charlie,
Just remembered a famous chippie whose boat was 20 feet six inches long. John Guzzwell, a cabinet maker who lived in South Africa, got stuck in the Channel Is during the war, then went to Victoria BC, where he built strip-planked Trekka in 1955 to a Giles design. He circumnavigated alone, but took an extended break to crew for Miles and Beryl Smeeton in their much larger Tzu Hang. They got pitch-poled and badly damaged in the South Pacific, but survived thanks in large part to Guzzwell's skills. Trekka is now at the British Columbia Maritime Museum. Their website shows her afloat in 2005. His fascinating book, Trekka around the World, has recently been republished.
Best regards,
Alan

Hello Alan, Hmm, sounds interesting, I will go and have a look see at the museum website, and maybe have a mosey round for the book?

Charlie.

Ah, but I am a Scot not a yank, and although swmbo is American, I don't think she would take to being called a yank either, since the Mason/Dixon line is still very much real, in her Texas/Louisiana eyes. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Moving aboard? Re Trekka

I got the title wrong. It's Trekka Round the World. The ISBN of the new edition, with added material by Guzzwell and by Hal Roth, is 0-938665-56-1 Haven't seen it yet, but may pick it up soon at The Nautical Mind in Toronto.

sh1te pressed tyhe wrong button, again!
I think you could live on a 22 nomad and work as a chippy, life would be a bit cramped, but most handtools would be on board anyway for extended cruising no?

I spend loadsa time on my 27ft tinchy beamed boat and the forepeak is full of sales and therefore not used as accom. and I get along fine in the main cabin. It's all about priorities and organisation. Do it I say.

Hello Steve, yes I have thought about it, in fact an aquaintance of mine was in the last one, didn't make it, had to turn back with a leaks problem. I have exchanged emails with Ewen Southby-Tailyour on and off. I might give it a go if I am around at the time, don't really fancy the Azores one much.

I see you have a Halcyon 27, nice boats! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I might aspire to something like that one day, but for now, my little Nomad will do me alright. and yes, she does have bilge keels.
