Greetings, Anyone any ideas of costs involved in moving a 35ft sailing yacht from Kip - scotland to plymouth by road or delivery. just trying to get an idea at the moment to see if it is worth viewing boats up north.

thanks

For info - I had my Westerly Corsair moved from Poole to Newcastle a couple of months ago. Cost was £1,000 plus craning/mast at either end. Beverly Transport in Hull did it for me - I recommend them. PM me if you need details.

We priced up Hamble to Fleetwood for a 37footer last year - it was coming out at around £2k - £2.5k when you include cranage at either end, riggers to lower / re-step the mast etc.

We delivered ours by sea in the end - much better! Kip to Plymouth would be a good trip. If you have good weather its only a week with plenty of stop overs for Guiness in Ireland and Pasties in Cornwall!

If you decide you don't want to do it by road, I'll help sail her down if you need crew. I'll send you a CV if you like.

Quoted £3000 for transport (including craneage at either end) a couple of years ago. That was Falmouth to Clyde.

Doesn't make economic sense.

Just recently got a quote of Weymouth to Holyhead for a 26ft boat for £600 plus VAT. Sounds very reasonable now...

Likewise. Have delivered in past for other forumites and regularly sail W. coast between Clyde and Cornwall.

Can I suggest you try John Shepherd He is Glasgow based and delivers new French boats to Scotland so often drives south empty. If you can fit in with his schedule, he does a good deal. He delivered my boat from Oban to Southern Brittany inclusive of ferry costs for £2000.

I moved my boat from Essex to West Wales for £800 by professional boat transport; excellent service: Western Marine Haulage 01208 851055

This is the way - a return load will attract a lower price. But you have to be flexible and wait for the call, have cranage available on a flexible basis to ensure a quick load/unload. That being the case, expect a 20-30 discount on the regular quoted cost. Cash of course.

I think a 3 figure transport charge for what you have in mind is eminently achievable.

Don't forget to have the whole thing covered by copper- bottomed insurance!

Many thanks to those who replied and PM'd me. It would seem it worth a trip North to view boats once I have sold mine.

Cost me £1200 to move 27ft 4.5 ton mv from Dumfries to larkhall, this included the hire of an 80 ton crane to lift out of water at Dumfries then lift off trailer into my driveway at Larkhall. The same guy quoted £1200 to move similar boat from Canvey island to Larky, but did not include craneage, which is approx £55 - £75 a lift if you are moving from Marina to Marina. The guy lives in Blackwood and is good, moves boats all around country and europe. If you want his name and number, drop me a line as his contact details are in my diary at work.
