While a mobile chart plotter with AIS receive only is quite easy to achieve, another expensive problem to overcome with mobile AIS transmit is the vhf splitter needed for both vhf and AIS sharing the antenna, you can’t use the sub £100 splitters which only allow vhf transmit
Edit: vhf receive transmit, AIS receive only

Bit OTT there I think ....

What splitter only allows VHF TX ? Defies the title Splitter !!

No need for splitter ..... just get a VHF antenna and a quick release clip for the rail .... OR have an antenna already on rail of each boat ...

Many people have good results with just a cheapo VHF antenna on the aft rail .... I used such until I tested the ONWA passive splitter ... a unit that people said would be useless .... Poo Poo ... it works a treat. I will not be spending the amount asked by the Active Splitter boys ...

Most budget active VHF and AIS splitters only allow vhf rx/tx, AIS rx.
You could of course use an additional vhf antenna just for the AIS and keep it separate from your VHF set.

OK ... not arguing - but I was searching splitters while back to sort my ONWA / VHF setup and most I saw were two way on both VHF and AIS ..... even the Matsutech and ONWA passive splitters are two way on both ... not as powerful of course as active - but they work.

But avoiding costs of splitters ... the cheap antenna on the rail is the obvious answer ...

What MMSI number do you use for a transferable AIS class B transceiver? Can you change it easily when moving the equipment from one boat (ship station) to another?

Onwa - yes you can .... just checked my KP39A and it does ....

Here's ONWA online showing :

With the later Firmware update .... the MMSI setup is accessed via the MMSI Setup in '3rd' menu ... that is 3x Menu button and then bottom right of the dialogue box. Press and up will come a Password dialogue .... default is 000000 .....

This gives access to MMSI programming.

Just clearing up a part of the info that pertains to moving such a unit across boats which OP may choose to do ....
