Mounting a new anchor on the bow

Hi all I've just replaced my CQR 14lb with a Delta 6KG and need to mount it on the bow (preferably without the usual anchor discussions...). Unfortunately these snazzy modern anchors don't have a hinge so it's a bit in the way. Does anyone have any suggestions for mounting? The bow roller won't work as it's not big enough to get the anchor away from the bow, and the roller reefing is in the way anyway. I don't really fancy shackling on the anchor every time. Since I have yet to find something PBO forum doesn't have an answer for I'm relying on you, dear forumite, to help me out with a solution.
The bow looks like the following, although you'll have to imagine a roller reefing system on there

Also, does the CQR hold any value other than scrap or remeniscing about the good old days when people didn't rant about anchors?

I also have a Delta which replaced a Harbourfast which is very similar to the CQR in design.

There will be a point at which the Delta rests in the bow roller with the pointy bit clear if the bow. Assuming that in this position the shank of the anchor does no foul the roller reefing, you could fit two right angle brackets, one either side of the slot in the aft end of the anchor and put a drop nose pin through the slot to stop the anchor deploying itself. This is basically what I have although on my boat the shank of the anchor lies in a slot in the bow and the pin passes through either side of the slot.

thanks for the reply, unfortunately this would be too close to the roller reefing, and the anchor would be sticking out quite a long way to avoid the bow which I don't think will leave enough length on board to steady it.

Partly because it's rusty and a new anchor isn't expensive, partly because it didn't hold very well and there are better designs available these days. It hasn't been in service with me for very long, it came with the boat.

FWIW the time it didn't hold very well was in mud/sand with 8m chain in 2m water. The water was fairly calm and we'd been there 2 hours when we started drifting. I've already bought the new one so no need for the whole discussion about anchoring

The old one was set and had been for 2 hours - short of diving down there's nothing more I could have done - apart from replacing the anchor. The difference is that this one will allegedly re-set better so it should then dig in again if it lets go

Could you make a simple hook-type support and mount it on the forward tube of the pulpit? You would then haul in the chain until the anchor came over the roller, then just lift it sideways a few inches and drop it into the support.

For development purposes, in its simplest form made from stainless flat bar in a U shape, width slightly more than the anchor, with one leg rounded off a little and hose-clipped to the pulpit.

Thanks Vyv, I'm not sure I follow completely - do you mean effectively mounting it off to the side on something similar to a bow roller but without the roller gubbins? If so that may work, if not could you explain further?

Is it possible to keep the Delta on chocks on the deck similar to the way in which the CQR is kept in the picture.

I have always kept my CQR on the deck like that and the boat I crewed for many years has a larger CQR kept on the deck.. just lashed to the pulpit legs without any chocks.

It is a minor inconvenience having to lift the anchor onto the stem head fitting on the occasions I am going to anchor but the bonus is that the stem head is clear of obstruction ready for the mooring chain every time I return to the mooring.

Thanks Vic, that's the problem. When I put the new one on the chocks the shaft sticks up quite a way because of the lack of hinge.

Yes, that's what I mean. You will need to check whether it's a realistic suggestion, difficult to picture the relative sizes, so just mock it up as I said above.

Yes they do have a value - put it on the For Sale on here or use eBay. When I had a Vivacity 20 some years back the CQR I had was fantastic in mud. I anchored at Burnham on Crouch a few years back when a F6 blew up and it was so fixed in the mud I had to pull it up as hard as I could and then wait for the tide to lift it - the bow was just under water before the anchor released!
