Motor Boats Monthly update

Which is fine, but I want printed copies. The only thing left is Powerboat and RIB (who must be loving this) which is ok but I really dont have an interest in RIBs. And some of their articles like the new evenrude engine I wonder of they even saw it working at all as it was woefully thin on real content and just had pr release images it seemed.

Any changes hinted at in MBY?

The news was as much of a shock to me as it was to everyone else so I am still taking stock of the situation and working out what we can do to incorporate some of the best elements of MBM (people and content) into MBY without diluting what we already have.

As someone has pointed out, it's impossible to please all of the people all of the time but I am determined to do what I can to ensure MBM's legacy doesn't go to waste. Rob Peake did a great job of revitalizing the magazine and I hope we can recapture some of that magic in MBY.

In the short term we will definitely be casting the net a little wider to cover some of the new and used boats which we might otherwise have left to MBM. However, I'd also love to hear which elements of the redesigned MBM you particularly enjoyed in the hopes we may be able to replicate something similar in MBY.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Sad to see MBM go. I was in the market for a 40 footer and I did a lot of research and comparison, but in the end it was after reading their excellent boat report on Princess P43 by Nick that prompted me to make the final jump and bought a P43. Best of luck to all the staff and thank you.

Update on Motor Boats Monthly

The consultation period regarding the proposal to cease publication of Motor Boats Monthly (MBM) ended today.

Time Inc. (UK) Ltd have now confirmed that this will proceed and the issue dated October, published on Thursday 18th September will be the last.

All subscribers will receive a letter with their Oct issue, which explains what will happen with their subscription and what their options will be.

Clearly it’s a very sad day for all of those involved and some of the team have chosen to sail (motor) off into the sunset whilst others are looking at alternative roles within the business.

The October issue will still be available to purchase at all leading newsagents and supermarkets (where stocked) as well as on the stand at Southampton Boat Show, which starts on the 12th Sept.

Many thanks

Richard

I got the issue but cannot find the letter, where was it?

It was in the plastic bag with your address on it, I binned mine but retrieved it when I read about it on the Sealine forum.

I already subscribe to MBM, looks like there will be less mags lying round the house from now on, SWMBO will be pleased, I'm really sorry to see this come to an end as I prefer it to MBY and have been subscribed for around 20 years now.

Interested to see an add for electronic edition when this is the last one.

Bugger! I used mine to light the fire. Anything with a name and address on it always gets destroyed.
Thanks for letting me know.
Perhaps Richard Shead can tell me what to do now.

If you do nothing they will transfer you to an MBY sub and if you already subscribe to that, just extend the sub. Alternatively, you can contact them and have PBO instead. Just shout if you need the contact details (haven't got them to hand as I post this)

Thank you for this info. Will go with MBY in the hope it moves into the real world.

Ditto. I quite like the 'superboat' stuff from a voyeuristic point of view, so if they add a couple of 'real world' boat tests and features then it could be the perfect magazine for me.

What do you do if you already have an MBY subscription as a gift (and don't want two copies!) and really don't want PBO?

As I already have a subscription to MBY and not wanting one to PBO I phoned Magazines Direct Customer Service (0330 333 0233), they told me that if I didn't want either of the options in the letter then they would give a refund (something I was surprised wasn't offered in the letter), as it turned out my subscription was up for renewal so I just needed to cancel my Direct Debit but others might appreciate a refund.

I also subscribed to both MBM & MBY, they automatically switched the balance of my MBM subs to MBY.... easy.

Great Shame but you can't compete with FREE online magazine

We're sad to confirm that unfortunately IPC Media has yesterday announced its intention to cease publishing Motor Boats Monthly and has entered into consultation with editorial staff on the title.

The consultation will conclude on 5 September 2014 and subscribers will be notified of their options following this date.

This is a great shame, having been a subscription reader for many years, the truth is Motor Boat Owner which is free to download through ISSUU, was clearly the death nail for MBM.

I had found that MBM had been increasingly obsessed with large Motor Boats costing £250,000 plus, as the subsequent advertising from the boat companies paid for the publication, whilst most of the readership were cruising around in boats in the £25,000 to £80,000 bracket (all used) and there was very little advertising revenue likely to come in other than a few back pages for that sector.

This is one of the reasons the readership was diverting to MBO, as its Free and Relevant .... first rule of publishing is to know your readership and if you don't give them what they want they will seek it else where.

As a foot note, I was offered MBY (when I rang up, no letter) which to my knowledge is full of super yachts .... so not for me as its more of the same, ah well PBO for the time being not to many Sail yachts though PLEASE!

Will we get to see the end of the Celtic Cruise in PBO?

May be MBO will pick it up???

Great Shame overall, but that's the digital revolution for you!

+1

I've also been trying to get this point heard, but I don't think the publishers are taking any notice. Why is Practical Boat Owner billed as 'Britain's best-selling yachting magazine'? Sure, much is common to both, which is why I buy it, but to get to what there is I have to wade through pages and pages of stuff about canvas and ropes :D. Seriously though, PBO should now be rebalanced so that it covers the hands-on stuff for both communities.

Just had a quick flick through, the current issue has a £130K Orkney, a £25K Scandicia, a used Rodman for £170K and six used RIBS from £30-60K.

Last month had a £19K Bayliner, £80K Finnmaster, £90K Draco, £30K Interboat, £20K secondhand Sunseeker, and six secondhand family boats from £11K - £60K.

You're spot on Ari, seems like they really made an effort to realign toward that section of the market/readership and if that's the case, they nailed it. Best edition that I remember reading for quite some time. Shame that it didn't get the time it needed to pick up pace...

Update on Motor Boats Monthly

The consultation period regarding the proposal to cease publication of Motor Boats Monthly (MBM) ended .....................

All subscribers will receive a letter with their Oct issue, which explains what will happen with their subscription and what their options will be.

I agree with all the comments about the improvement in the magazine recently and my sympathies with the staff but..... I was bought a subscription for MBM for Christmas last year and converted it to a digital subscription earlier this year. So I have not received a letter or email and only spotted the brief reference to this being the final edition by chance, I don't usually read the editorial.

Who do I or my wife (who bought the present/subscription) contact to claim a refund?

Thanks for any advice.
