I am looking at a Cutlass 26 a Scandinavian Cabin Cruiser. What type of boat are they and are they good for inshore boatng? I am on the Isle of Wight. Is there anyone who could share info. Thanks.
Produced by Jens Skorgenes outside Molde in Mid-Norway, a yard with loads of traditions going back to wooden clinker build boats way back. This one is known in Norway as a "Tresjord 26", with a build history going back very early in the 70's ... if not to 68...
The yard is well known (un-fortiunately not building in Norway any more), for high quality and solid builds.
The 26 came in a couple of configurations ...
1) with or without a tiny aft cabin.
2) two alternative lay-outs inside ... one with helm/navigator on each side and entrance to front through centre, and one with navigator beside helm on Port side in a 1+2 configuration, with access on the Starboard side. (We had both)
3) Is more of a rarety and was deviced during the time when motorsailers became quite popular.
Later they extended the hull to be 28 ft, but similar configurations.
Capable inshore cruiser and we travelled from Molde in North and into the baltic in ours, which in theory means that she'll be capable of cross channel journeys ... although not channel hopping at that speed. Full displacement and a bit roly poly, but very comfortable at sea. This was the boat I was brought up with and would have no hesitation to say that she (we had three of them in various configurations, where the last one was a 28...) was brilliant and we as a camily of five spent three weeks on vacation onboard having great fun up and down the Norwegain coastline and beyond. Engined by lazy Perkins, Fords and Volvos.
Thanks for your reply, your answer has put my mind at rest. Would you know the average price of these boats. I am looking at one selling for $12000.00. is this a good price?
USD 12K (approx £6K) is reasonable I guess, definetly when compared with the Norwegian Market.... but there may be a limited market for these in the UK... also dependent on configuration, age and condition ....
This is the market in Norway for these ...
1973 Model, non AC for about £12K
1974, non AC for about £9K
1970, completely refurbished and new engine for about £22K
Only you can make the desision... if the boat fills your needs, does what it says on the tin, and is in mechanically good nick, then it should be a relatively safe buy... but be aware of the somewhat limited second hand market in the UK for this type of vessel .... there may be room for negotiations here ... and once price is agreed, please do have a survey ... Oooh....These boats should have the Veritas Plaque and Certificate Number Displayed somewhere onboard ..(usually inside towards the bulkhead on Starboard Side) .
