Motor Boat Chat, conclusions from recent feedback

Re: massive cosy corner tho...

Not sure if that's what was sed kim? Chrispy is just wanting ensure that the feel ain't lorst, hence the cosy corner analogy. The ones he doeswant to lose (ok, I want to lose) are the nasty BB-baiters, for which we need yr help, thanks to date. We need to try and hold on to thwe ones who turn up, ask questions, and clear orf into ether without any feedback. So we shld (and I think do) give advice with clear indication of interest/nosey parkerishness to hear about How They Got On. Always good fun to hear how it develops, and the very essence of cosy corner when someone (hopefully lots ) have intresting story, questions, evolving story...the overlying "threads" across the actual threads, naturally the very essence of "e-knowing" people .

Re: how long?

Do you plan to keep things for ages and ages then Kim? Or for ever? how much space have you got, how much is used? Is this the (good) reason why no piccies?

Chris., In defense of Boatone I think he was gently pulling your tinywinky. He is the bad as the rest of us. He makes a valid point though. This forum should (and does) welcome everyone, so much so that Raggies come here too. There are a lot of Lurkers out there and they should be encouraged to add their say and not just read the postings. I know John Stripp (Strippy) reads the forum regular but have yet to see a posting from him.

Re: massive cosy corner tho...

Okay and that's all fine, as long as we are talking about BB abusers only. They'll be dealt with in the usual way. As for the rest of the world, well you know what it can be like when you find yourself the only 'outsider' in a cosy country pub. And before Haydn tells me to get a life for the third time in two days, I have seen examples in the past few weeks where newcomers feel they have to apologise to the great and the good before even making their first post. Can that be right?

Re: massive cosy corner tho...

no, it's not right. Cd you give examples without breaking offical secrets act or PM? Suspect I am partly to blame. Tho some newbies are superBB aware, other just got the keyboard plugged in. No problem with searay 240 apologising for double posting? was there? Mind you "Rich" posting a question with "And No twaddel form Matts" amusing, got twaddle from all others cept me.

Sorry, tell me/us anyway so we can learn a bit. We don't havbe helicopter view as praps you do, can't see lurkers or whatever.

Re: how long?

Threads are forever, unless we eventually discover a reason why we have to time limit them. Forums are on a database platform now, so in essence we think it will prove to be robust enough to keep everything available for search a long time ahead.

Reason for no piccies at present...main one I guess is there's a lot to monitor here and pics are another potential avenue for abuse and also copyright tangles - as you may suppose IPC are a big and obvious target in that area and we cop it if a forum user gets it wrong. Another reason was the great emphasis on the need for download speed a few months back, which made us nervous of graphics. Also we are doing a lot of back-end spring cleaning (in the autumn?) at the mo so it's a job we'd like to avoid at present. But the subject still falls into the 'never say never' category.

Re: massive cosy corner tho...

Got to run now (this thread like playing table tennis with two bats!) but give me a few hours and I'll try and find a few examples. Not so much thinking very recent...around DFL days for example when a few genuine newcomers got flamed. Also the inevitable groans seem to appear when we get same or similar questions but bottom line is anyone brand new here probably hasn't used the search functions yet and certainly wouldn't have known what has gone perhaps just a few days before.

Having spent many years on MBM answering the same questions for many people I suppose I have a natural tolerance but it's inevitable that people fresh on here will need the same regular advice.

In the fullness of time we'll be building up boating FAQs and searchable archives on the magazine websites that assist with such things.

Finally, the Rich episode. He was unlucky...it's normally my style to pick on the one person who can actually help me! But going back to this subject there's that point again about others trying to use MBC for serious purposes, as well as for very different ones such as your MV2 featurette. As far as I am concerned there's room for both here.

Re: pics...

....been sed before but just as reminder it's easy to put pics on photopoint (or similar) then put the url in the post.

I think that in the best possible way you've spawned a monster. That which started as a second string to a pair of spealist mags has now turned into a self perpetuating entity in its own right. This forum has attracted some of the most knoledgable and experienced boaters that fly the WWW. airwaves. You couldn't have done better if you tried. The reaction that this site draws must be the envy of any site designer.
The down side is that as in most cases when you draw together a group of dedicated people its not long before "a them and us situation" developes. Its not always antagonistic towards what it considers outsiders but when viewed for the first time the group can be daunting. If you tried to change the forum now it would be an uphill struggle that will most probably result in the loss of the major contributors and their combined experience resulting in a rather tame question and answer site as seen on any of the manufacturers sites.
What you've got now is a comunity that would carry on even without the IPC input. I agree like all societies and organisations it needs rules and a policeman (Thats you by the way). If posters do run away after the first experience then that's a shame but I'd bet they got their question answered. This is the only site I've ever heard of where people rush to find the closest internet cafe to look up the latest developements whilst on their holidays abroard. Whatever the secret formular is that you used when you started the site was, you should bottle it. You could make a fortune from the lesser site designers.
Rules, yes. But never kill off the golden goose.

Here's an idea.
Why don't you try organising a get together some time. Pick a club somewhere with a decent bar. Lay on some food and music, Charge a fiver per head at the door and all comers welcome. It'd be a bugger if you attracted more people that the mag's do.

Re: ooh yes a party

good idea C.

Suggest praps around the time of LBS becos
1) more distant posters have another reason to make trip
2) IPC are ready for an expenses frenzy from Kim etc anyway, so forget the fiver.

Yes please. I love a party.

So it's all round to Kim's hotel room Saturday after the Boat Show closes. Bring a bottle and a dish. Second thoughts, forget the dish just bring more bottles - and a sick bag for BarryD.

Re: ooh yes a party

But Matt, I thought you liked warm places! Wot about a party at Miami BS in Feb? Transatlantic air fares low at that time of year.

Re: ooh yes a party

hmm bit far for many tho? And not very MBM-y. It will have to be in the hammersmith scout hut.

Re: Motor Boat Chat, conclusions from recent feedb

The bolx talked 'ere is amusing. To imply that the forum might become the personal fiefdom of a few isn't born out by the sheer numbers of people who do post.

How d'you stinkpotters have the time, though?

Re: Motor Boat Chat, conclusions from recent feedb

There's plenty of time when you don't have all that tacking stuff to do. Start engines, set autopilot and start posting easy aint it.

Where to find the time...

Ahh ParaHandy a good question, seeing as to go forward - push the stick forward, and to slow down or go backwards - pull it back. This frees up the time that saily types use to keep the boat trimmed to best use the wind or worse having to steer 45 degrees from where you really wanted to go so as to be allowed to run down on it.

That and as it is complete bolx in some cases (often by Moi) you don't actually need to type all the much, before older and wiser heads go "this is bolx" and skip the rest of your post...

Maybe so; many are the times the Vital Spark's been glad of the rag ben the funnel for when the coal runs out.
