No not an advert! (for a change) a request to see if anyone knows where there are any charter companies for bareboat 25 - 30ft boats on the south coast. i cant find any and wondered why it was not more popular, with the cost of boating one would think it would be popular.

The insurance cost is prohinvative as it is roughly the same regardless of size. Also, on smaller boats the coding cost also makes it uneconomical with the reduced rate you get for the charter on a smaller boat.

When I was considering putting the BMB on charter, my insurance company wanted and extra £200 for every bare boat charter (though this did cover the individual for 14 days). The charterer had to either submit a suitable qualification (they would not accept an ICC) or a signed boating CV showing sufficient experience.

What is a coding cost and where do you get one? that insurance is high but if renting then £200 for insurance for 14 days is not bad considering the price of some bits you could damage

The insurance abroad always seems to be in the price.

i have seen a few rib charters on the south coast but wonder why they get insured and hard boats don't. from what you are saying the initial costs to set up a charter boat are enormous. would boat sharing be another way or is that got hidden problems?

Charter price for a 33/34ft boat seems to be around £450 plus insurance.

A week would be around £300 per day, so £2100 plus insurance. The insurance costs £200 for a day or a week, so a week offers better value in those terms.

If it was a regular occourance, my isurance co did offer a year Bareboat policy for £1200.

Thanks Jez, do you have any figures for the cost of the alterations, I would just like to know roughly what it would cost to make a boat charterable and the kind of things that would need changed. I understand the insurance aspect now.

I think boat sharing could lead to all kinds of problems, I am sure some have gone well, it's just finding a like minded partner, you may have to look carefuly into that.

You have to make sure the boat is up to MCA regulations.
For example, with the BMB this involved the following:

Raising the SS cockpit rails aft to the required 1 metre height from the cockpit sole
Installing fuel cocks
Installing a fire port for the engine bay
Providing 6 automatic life jackets and servicing the existing 4 jackets
Ensuring all window ports could be locked shut
Ensuring there were water tight hatch blanks in the event a hatch is lost at sea.
You must carry a liferaft for the number ofpersons the boat is coded for
Installing a wash board in the companion way
Additonal bilge pumps in saloon and forward cabin
raining manual and maitenance logs required
Compass swung
Catagory C mediacal kit
Full charts for your intended cruising area
Plus a load of sundries such as new fire extinguishers, hand bearing compass, lights and shapes, VHF card, anchor ball etc etc.
