The Royal Southern also has J/80s that are used for various training and racing activities and I believe can be hired for regattas.
Is that the goal to promote bridge to the under 80s and organise evening lectures 6 days a week on such subjects as advanced yoghurt knitting and the history of the clothes press? They are doing quite well in that regard I’m told.
Shame is that the executive and the vast majority of the membership appear completely unaligned at present. The vocal local minority is enjoying the sound and pressure of its own voice in this down season because the rest of us have jobs and other interests to pursue.
I was tempted to start a thread on the whole subject, but have temporarily quavered in fear of becoming the subject matter of one of the Comoodore’s ‘Dear Members’ emails, as sent last week. Perhaps tomorrow I will start something.
What might be of more interest is to talk to the Royal Thames about their J80s. They split their time between Queen Marys and Cowes and seem to have a lot of well organised stuff going on.
In terms of the biggest fleet though, I am sure the XOD still comes out on top does it not?
Seaview Mermaids. I think the club season starts quite late, as the fleet is chartered a lot.Aren't one of the Seaview classes almost pay'n'play?
Island SC have some Sonars.
I believe the executive have decided sailing is getting in the way of the core goals of the club.
What basis do you have for that suggestion?I've spotted Melges 24 in the 'East', but ... racing spirit might be a bit 'calmer' (less competitive ...)
Incredible. And sad.I believe the executive have decided sailing is getting in the way of the core goals of the club.
What basis do you have for that suggestion?
It might be worth looking at Royal Burnham One Design. Royal Burnham Yacht Club is easy to get to from central London and is about half the distance compared to Southampton.
Sorry if it sounded offensive It's probably just all the buzz around Solent which makes it 'more competitive' in a newcomers eyes. However, they do have a great concentration of clubs and events.
What is the hottest spot in the East? Burnham?
I will be living in South London / Croydon area which makes me leaning towards Solent. Ideally Brighton of course, but I did not hear much about racing keelboats there
Brighton Marina Yacht Clubs has pretty healthy racing fleet.
they are about to start their Biannual intro to yacht racing course which would give you a great intro to the club and their racing fleet.

I can't argue with this. While IRC is a very good handicap system as such things go, OD is always more fun and competitive than handicapping.I would prefer keelboats for several reasons:
1. Smaller teams, more involvement
2. Competitive fleet of same boats rather than disappointing scoring systems
3. Feasibility of purchase
