Here's the front of it: (You've seen the back)

But, as I said, the cable clamp idea - as recommended by Salty John/ a morse engineer - has worked a treat. I shall however carry a spare cable in case of future problems.

Thanks it is a MORSE MV so set it up as the you tube and forget the clamp

When I had this problem many years ago I spoke to an engineer at Morse. He suggested I put a cable clamp on the cable jacketed section and tighten it until the problem went away, which it did. I never had the problem again in three years of full time cruising.
I note a couple of others have found the same solution.
Hi - thanks for this idea! I did exactly this and it cost $1.50 - not the hundreds being quoted by the local yard experts. Worked immediately. My boat is in good condition and the control cables in perfect shape so I doubted the advice to replace / etc. Thanks much!

If that doesn't come apart, a wire rope clamp will fit.
Can't say that crimping the cable is a solution with long-term appeal, given the botheration if the cable eventually fails.
Ed. beaten to it by SJ.
You wouldn't necessarily need a clamp to apply direct to the cable sheath. You can use some stiff material as a cuff and clamp down carefully on that.
