I've just bought Kaleno, a Morgan Gile 28 built in Teinmouth in about 1950. Does anyone know anything of her previous history? Obviously I have her registration papers but they do not tell the whole story. Many thanks.
I own a 28' Morgan Giles sloop, built in 1948 in Teignmouth. I understand that the 28 footers were part of a class known as the West Channel One Designs, although the class was originally designed as a 25' - you may notice that your iron keel appears to be made of two castings.
I think there were around 6-8 boats built, I own number 2, 'Tilly Two' (built as Whimbrel) and I am aware of 'Destiny' in Plymouth and 'Falandra' in South Wales.
My boat has the orginal wooden mast and a sail device of a 'W' inside a circle, although I'm not sure whether this is authentic or not. I understand that the Teignmouth museum has some line drawings and information about boats produced at Morgan Giles' yard.
I have owned Tilly Two for around 8 years, and have cruised her across the Channel to Brittany several times. She is a great sea boat, although she can be wet, having a low freeboard. She shows a surprising turn of speed if you ease the sheets slightly and has the benefit of pretty much sailing herself.
I would be very interested in meeting up with other Morgan Giles owners and perhaps having an informal rally or association.
