the earlier post reminded me of this little incident!
I got called to sort out a B&G autopilot on a rather pretty classic yacht a few weeks ago. It was trying to work, but not very well.
After a couple of hours trying to fault find whilst hanging upsidedown in the smallest, darkest most awkward bit of the boat, I finally decided to rip the course computer out and return to the workshop.
Another hour chasing faults and cleaning the circuit board to no avail.
So, I contacted the owner and said, "look, this seems to have had a bit too much moisture in it, it will have to go back to B&G, its not looking good"
The owners reply was "Oh, that might have been when she sank last year!"
"hmmm, thanks" I thought.
