Wow, impressive.
My solution is nowhere near that lighting power of course, but once the eyes have adapted at the darker environment it's good enough to swim up to 10m or so around the boat with nice visibility.
I'll try to take a pic next time, possibly with the u/w camera. The effect is in fact very nice when looking up at the hull from 2 or 3 meters below the surface, which is within pretty basic snorkeling range.
...though the main advantage of my solution remains the cost of course, in the ballpark of a hundred vs. some thousands... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I promised to show some 'White' in action. These photos are test shots before the AYS. They are our 36-watt lights submerged c. 60 cm in Antibes Port Vauban ( apart from JFM, who can name whose yacht is normally moored there ?). Water there is very colored ( dirty) and was that evening. There is 1 meter between every slab to give you an idea of spread, all photos taken on a cheap camera on 'Auto'.
Firstly White,
By the way, en route to NCE yesterday we nearly rear ended the photo balloon man's van. He has been parking it on scrub land near the refuge en route down to M V. He should be careful where he parks it as someone might set it alight????
With your white, you are getting the normal blueing affect. Same as my swimming pool picture immediately above, and same reason real swimming pools can look a bit blue
In water, red light travels least well. So if you squirt in equal amounts of rgb, the red dies out faster. Hence, out at the fringes, it looks blue greeny. Like the pics. Also, the human eye is generally less good with red, so can tend to blue things a bit. Double whammy.
So, squirt perfect white light into water and you get it white quite near the bulb but as the light beam spreads it goes blue ish. Quite nice effect, as shown by your first pic and several other pics in this thread
(BTW, EME, Gareth explianed all this to me when I protested that the red channel wasn't pulling its weight!)
Err very local parlence not boatie at all, MV = Moulin Vieux near our respective gaffs.
Yep not sure that Styroglass is the same stuff as Lexan, I know where to get it though if you need it but I am not sure if it is acrylic or polycarbonate based. Will continue with contacts down here. Actually EME might know where to get some, I know he has a bought some custom acrylic tanks down here recently so he might now?????
Isnt this even stronger than Cast Acrylic ? Ill have a look around .. no problem with cast ( or extruded )acrylic sheets but never come across that before
Ah, dont want to get into massive thread drift but these folks tell me I need perspex not Lexan. Yes lexan is more bullet proof but perspex is strong enough. More to the point, lexan is softer so picks up surface scratches much faster, which is bad for a boat widnscreen and disastrous if the gameplan is to edge-light. So, perspex it is! Thanks for the
Most acrylic is extruded, cast is stronger ( and twice the price !) .. but I'm teaching granny to suck eggs .. I order mine from Balitrand ( or rather scavenge their off-cuts) but there is a supplier in Nice ( name escapes me ) - Ill look them up.
btw - i am still not happy with Mr Helium the aerial photographer. Hes decided the pictures of our lights are worth more buried in his file. There appear to be no public copies ( even the lady who commissioned them hasnt any) as I've been asked to supply 6 of the ones we took for next years Antibes Yacht Show brochure ... I will have his for a little less by the end of August !
Balitrand is where on MOnday I spotted sheets of stuff on they call Styroglass in thicknesses up to 5mm but sheet size is max 2m x 1m. IIRC JFM need 2.1m x 1m ?
yep I need 2.2m long x 6mm thick really. I want top stuff, cast acrylic and I'd prefer a brand like Perspex. Becuase of the effort I'm going to put in to make this thing. Anything beginning "Styro" sounds like that junk that B+Q sell. [/prejudice] If there is a Nice supplier then great. Thanks!
I found them superb when I was looking for a sheet of acrylic to manufacture my gas hob cover,(you know the one you donated the high gloss door for me to cut and make the surround for!)......
Many thanks again for that.
Lights look great btw.
Thanks. My issue is I wanted to find a stockist in SofF, because the finished windscreen will be about 1.7m wide and a bit tricky to put on a plane. Though not sure on that, I might still do t in UK then crate it up and stick it on a courier van
Anyway, yeah, meant to ask, did the hob lid diy manufacture all work out ok in the end?!

All fine. I'm showing the pics for those who do happen to like them or like looking at them, and to show a really nice bit of engineering by a new UK company - there really is some serious engineering (mechanical, electronic, specific LED technology) in getting that much of a light beam with that much control from just 12amps @24v and full credit to Lumishore for developing this as a start up

Call me cynical but have you done an endorsement deal with Lumishore? (No harm in that but you do seem very keen on them.)
