As a matter of interest how do you treat and form this material? Do you cut it with a jig saw, then heat it to bend it and how do you get a perfectly smooth edges, do you router an edge or flame the edge?
It's a big subject. Yes cut with jigsaw, carefully. Round off edges with sanding block and virtually polish them (though, I will want it slightly rougher than polished to get the edgelight effect). Bending is actually easy - make a former and use a heatgun
If boat was in uk I wd make ply template and get a plastics firm to cut and make the perspex. Indeed, I might still do that, then get it crated and shipped to France...
I will when we update next ! I know it's photoshopped as there is no way would I be standing so calmly on the Bathing Platform if those little beauties were there !
No, I haven't done any endorsement deal. Nor would i take it if they offered it - they are a tiny UK start up company, founded by a young guy who is just a very clever engineer with an entrepreneurial streak. Posters EME and Wakeup on here introduced me to him. Shortly after, EME (semi retired) joined the business as a partner to manage the commercial/distribution/marketing side
Seriously Observer, these guys are in the early days of getting the business going* with minimal capital (their savings) and no budget to give me the sort of money i dont get out of bed for. They are just a nice example of a UK invention (Cardiff University technology) turned into a start up manufacturing business, potentially world stage, and I'm helping them just out of willingess to help, absolutely no money paid to me, discounts given to me, or other finacial gain for me. Even the fuel, and the canapes and beer, used on the photoshoots that are on youtube, were paid for by me
In the interests of full disclosure I bought their set #1 lights for about £5k (I can't remeber the exact figure). That's a £2k ish discount to the now-settled list price, but that list price didn't exist when I bort the lights cos they were at an R&D stage then. I dont call that an endorsement deal. For the 2 blue lights on my tender i paid list price minus the discount EME gives to everyone on this forum, 10% I think. I have merely volunteered to help them on the publicity front but I categorically have no endorsement obligations - I am perfectly free to tell EME and Lumishore to sod off and never speak to them again.
Come on Observer, you know me better than that, I wouldn't enter into an endorsement deal, use these forums to push a commercial product for personal gain, and not fess up! I do use these forums to push products that i like (not just Lumishore, Essexboatyards too, for example), for no commercial gain, but that's very ok (and anyway it's all imho)
*Dont take that comment as meaning the lights are lousy prototypes. They aren't. They are top quality engineering and fully of a quality fit to sell onto world markets. No question of that in my mind. Don't buy other makes of light just becuase the makers of them have been established say 2-3 years whereas Lumishore is new. The Lumishore product is simply better, no question about it
JFM - Thanks for clarifying that, I've been fretting all day about it and hoped you would reply. So much better from you than me.
Observer I'm pleased you were cynical about JFM's pleasure with our products ! I know I may well have been if it were me. Others can now see the truth!
I confess that knowing JFM's engineering background and his passion for excellence I did (momentarily) wonder about his brand new 58 being a launch installation --- We are (obviously) delighted that it turned out the way it has, we owe him so much on so many different levels. His only reward, as he says, has been our gratitude.
I'll add a little more information To JFM's post:-
- Gareth ( my partner-in-crime and technical wizard ) has designed and developed LED lighting applications (almost) all his working life for one of (if not the) world's leading led light engine developer and manufacturer. He was a founding employee of that company which is now LSE-listed. This is why we are so confident in our technology, we genuinely are streets ahead of the competition.
- JFM was going to buy LED underwater lighting before he knew of our products
- Lumishore's existence can, in many ways, be traced back to this forum !
- Edit --our original development was our 'Drivelites' and it is photos of those you see on Our Website. They had/have been available for much longer than our Thru-Hull products. Our website needs updating but if anyone wants our updated brochures please ask.
- In defense of Lumishore's integrity, I had never mentioned any forum discount on the board, but, now its out I'm sure other forumites can confirm it is true. However I will continue to offer it on receipt of a PM. Terrible marketing but just the way I am.
JFM -- if semi-retirement 1s 16/7/365 than I'm [/i]never[/i] retiring /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
My question was mostly tongue in cheek, as I'm sure you know.
It did cross my mind that you may have got a sweetheart price on your installation, which I suppose you did in a way, and good for you. And congratulations to Lumishore who have a (clearly) very satisfied customer who is helping sell their products in the best way possible.
I see what you mean about a proper commercial endorsement - it wouldn't be economic for you if it was for them and not for them if it was for you (I think you're saying?). I do know that you wouldn't endorse/recommend/praise their product if it wasn't actually every bit as good as you have said.
It does look great on your Squaddie but I have to say it's all a bit too blingy for me (although I do have a sneaking wish I could do something like it). But it wouldn't be the same on my 'range-rover-of-the-seas' and I can't afford it anyway (so that's a fair dollop of sour grapes there.)
I have fitted my "Riblite" but not yet tested it, in the water. I was very, very impressed with the quality of workmanship in the light and also very impressed with there help. I will be very pleased if it performs anything like the ones I've seen on here, they look the dogs danglies! By the way, I'm also not easy to please, you just have to see my boat to know that.

It's great to see a new UK business with a good product (I know jfm wouldn't wax lyrical if it wasn't really good. Congratulations and I wish you well with the business.
Englander Oh the weight of expectation ! Looking forward to it ...
Observer Thanks for your kind wishes ... we've had great fun as well as challenge so far. I always seem to get lucky and work with great products/services and good people, so I'm as happy as it comes ... or rather I will be when we get really established ! So far it has been amazingly successful given the products we manufacture in the prevailing economic conditions.
