More teak advice please!

Hi Tony, thanks for the comprehensive reply. I've now equipped myself with the proper equipment to hopefully do a decent job this week (white doodlebug pad, wiper blade, adjustable rose for my hose). I had half a pot of Semco Natural left so I've bought some more which should be enough to do the whole boat twice. I'll put a little more care and effort into it this time and will take some photos.

I've also sourced some K2R (available from Lakeland on the High Street) to keep it looking good.

Did you give your Gtechniq D3 a try?

Pete

Good to hear Pete.

I've yet to fully test out the D3 by means of a comparison against the Semco, but I'll get the ball rolling over the next few weeks and sort out a decent test between the two, perhaps add a few other products and methods also.

So I gave the cockpit and bathing platform a good clean using Wessex with a coat of Semco added once dry. The (18 month old) BP has come out OK, see below.

However, the black caulking in the cockpit seems to be leaching when I apply the Semco giving me grubby black stains. Is this due to the Sika (or whatever) being old, a bad batch or user error? I suspect that I will have to clean it again with 2 part or some washing powder and leave it untreated, unless Gtecniq would help.

Any ideas?

FP ended up being "parked" on a slope facing downhill over the winter.
This was not a good thing, because the water pooled on the flat surfaces and didn't run off like it usually does.

Result being my starting point this morning was this:

I used the Wessex 2-part cleaner, plus some Semco Natural, and now my arms have stopped working.
It's still somewhat patchy, and hopefully the colour will calm down a little over time, but it's a lot better than it was yesterday.

Nice work guys :encouragement:

Pete, yes the caulking sounds like it's getting on a bit, the caulking is the jam in the sandwich, if it were teak alone it would be easy, good rinsing and working until the water runs clear is critical. By the looks of it, I'd say you've nailed it!

I've heard of some caulking being affected by the Wessex 2 part.

I've not had the problem myself.
If indeed it's only 18 months old then I'd be looking for other reasons than age, how long was part 1 on the teak before neutralising?

This forum's acting funny at the minute, I cant seem to add pictures of teak I did yesterday.

The 18mth old BP teak was fine. It was the 2003 cockpit teak that I had problems with (no photo I'm afraid).

Just to add... I now have another teak table to run a comparison test on.

Going to divide it into four quarters, what do you guys think would be the top four competing teak protection products?

Semco, teak oil (tung & linseed) Patio magic & Boracol?? or other?

My suggestion would be...

1) Semco - current champion
2) Gtecniq - challenger
3) Marine AGlaze - another challenger (https://www.marineaglaze.com/product/complete-teak-care-kit/)
4) Washing powder and white vinegar - the Superyacht favourite

Hard to tell (I didn't prod it), but when I wiped my Semco soaked cloth on it the cloth turned black.

This is normal when the caulking goes past a certain point, it will have its own carbonised % on top, this will indeed stain a cloth if wiped.
You can remove this with acetone, but you'll probably need to 2 part once again after.

A foam application brush might be better.
