Hello

Does anyone have any experience mooring in the Helensburgh area?

Any advice on the good and the bad for this area?

Many thanks
Paul

RNYC does an attractive deal of 50% off for your first year on a mooring.

Of course you have to add the cost of membership, but even with that it's not too bad

There are moorings at Helensburgh Sailing Club, but I know now more about them than they exist.

I believe that most of the other moorings (not counting Silvers, but they are on the wrong side for Helensburgh) in the Gareloch are privately owned and when I was looking for one eight years ago I was told that they changed hands for about £3,000 a time. Sounds high to me, but I suppose they are the nearest decently sheltered moorings to Glasgow.

You could have someone put your own mooring down in the Gareloch for around £1800-£2000. Join an association with an annual fee of £50. Annual service of about £150. Serviceable life of around 5-6 years before parts of mooring requires replacing. Do the maths it’s a good deal.

Agreed, but are there spaces? That seemed to be the problem when I was asking - all spaces taken so the only way to get one was to buy a whole mooring.

That's the problem I've been having.... the lack of spaces in the upper areas of the Clyde. Existing moorings that become available tend to be 'word and mouth' and even with me living local in Greenock, it's still difficult.

Surely the spaces are allocated by the Crown Estates, have you approached them?

How about this: https://www.gumtree.com/p/boats-kayaks-jet-skis/boat-mooring-off-helensburgh-sailing-club/1313263721

If the Gareloch is covered by a moorings association the Crown Estate will have devolved allocation to them. It might well be worth contacting Bidwells (the CE agents) to ask (a) what moorings associations cover the area and (b) if they have any spaces in non MA bits.

Well spotted! LOL.... That was the advert which got me interested in this area :)

It's quite far out from the shore though so I'm not sure how protected it would be!

Nothing is particularly sheltered from the west there, so being closer inshore is probably only a time advantage. The price is pretty good.

it's the northerlies that are the problem there - especially at HW when the waves go over Rhu spit, and the fetch is greatly increased (caused a bit of bother at Rhu marina 3 ish years ago)

we had a RNCYC mooring for 5 years. summer only. a long time ago Dad used to keep his boat at Garelochead in the winter (v little fetch from the N...)

the moorings the other side of the loch from Helensburgh are really not much longer to drive to

os joing Helensburgh sailing club, and pay/lay a mooring.

edie - James Watt marina did a v good weekly deal for me, for several weeks through the winter this year.

dumbarton/bowling - miles up river. both tidal entrances
