I was forced by the mooring authority to have my swing mooring proffessionally inspected. They insisted on replacing the old iron mass as it was showing signs of rusting . I had no choice and they fitted a railway wheel. I think of 250kgs. They hada water pump to blast the sand so that it was left semi submerged. Railways in the north of here are big business there being about 4 different lines privaely owned carrying iron ore at about 80 tonnes per truck and 100 trucks in a train. So worn railway wheels are plentiful. Although he charged me quite a bit to supply and fit the wheel.
Any it would not be my first choice for a DIY mooring. I would go for iron mongery that is more manageable in weight and use multiple pieces chained together. Just avoid sharp projections if it is a dryinjg mooring. The concrete filled tire seems a good choice and several chained togethershould be OK.
You could also add anchors or home made fishermans look alike made of iron bar to aid the holding of a central mass.
IMHO use what you can find around. good luck olewill

I clicked on your link and lost two hours of my life! Fabulous videos and information on Britannia class locos, always my favourite since I watched them every day with my brother, early 1950s. Wonderful, thanks. Might go to their open day in October.
