As I said above the eye should fit comfortably but snugly over the cleat. i.e. The eye diameter being less than the cleat length if it is not under tension.
As above. never be tempted to thred an eye between the cleat pillars like so when on a mooring:
This is because should you need to get the boat off in bad conditions the tension on the strop will severely restrict your ability to do so. The only time using this method is viable is around a pontoon cleat when the boat cleat is O-X-O and you can cast off discarding lines.
