Mooring buoy and rafting up etiquette

Re: Equal rights=equal obligations

See what I mean, a good parent, thats the point I've been trying (un-successfully) to make, its the parents!!! But we must stop this, one person has already resigned, so I think we had better leave it, or Kim will have our guts for garters!

Re: Equal rights=equal obligations

You never told me you were a prostitute, somebody should have told me, just wait till I see that Haydn!

Re: Equal rights=equal obligations

Have I stumbled across a forum on parenting?

We were all kids once.

Some of appear not to have matured much at all.

Re: Equal rights=equal obligations

Dont start, I've been trying to stop this for a while! You are not helping, Thankyou.

Re: Equal rights=equal obligations

You may as well ask, why do we have to put up with people? I have been as much troubled by thoroughly "nice and quiet" people listening to The Archers and guffawing over cups of tea as I have by rowdy kids. The problem is that these people, be they brats or old codgers, are in our space and we resent it. Not unnaturally, perhaps, when one of the reasons we sail is to extent the boundaries of that space and find some peace and quiet.

I have four kids who were reasonably behaved in public. The worst thing an older person could do in their company was bristle. The kids picked up the vibrations just like a horse that knows you're scared. This had a terrible effect on them. They became loud, mischievous and cheeky while all the time peeking through the curtains at the boat next door to see what effect they were having. Most of the time I didn't blame them. I could put a stop to it, but I could never stop the giggles. Adults who treated them as ordinary people didn't get this treatment and never had any problems.

Re: Equal rights=equal obligations

Yes - as a casual bystander who has been watching your attempts to curb this for some time now - I didn't think you'd allow Donald his threepeneth (or however the bloody hell you spell it!)
What about ToMo call you a prostitute - and how does he know?
I think Spankerwrapper has broken all records for a new user 65 posts and counting - probably get a handheld radargpsvhf when Kim returns or a lifetime ban!

The scottish series at Tarbert loch fyne always has trots of up to 10 abeam however there are also outside mooring at about six boats out.
This is very usefull for leaving unattended boats on when inside boats want to leave

we usually have about 200 boats plus committe and spectator boats all leaving to race at the same time

Re: Almost entered the fray

I think the fray is now over, one resignation, four divorces, six fights and numerous bloody noses!

Re: Almost entered the fray

Almost! I would like to know where kirky is, I don't think we can apologise anymore than we have.

Re: Almost entered the fray

I love a good scrap.

Now what was achieved. B****r all.

The answer has to be if you don't like kids or someone tying up to you then anchor off, otherwise accept that these things go with the territory.

Re: Almost entered the fray

I guess you missed it all, but I agree with you, I do a fair bit of anchoring, if you get my drift! Like the Fisher 46, was tempted by one, with the bowsprit and big rig, yours got that? Do they sail/motor as well as they look, they must be cavernous inside!

Re: Almost entered the fray

You get some good experiences when rafted, as well as some bad ones.

Another time in Dunmore East we took a boat alongside us, I think a Pioneer (sp?) one of those with a semicircular top to the companionway. Next morning we looked out to see that the apparently single-handed owner had his engine almost completely in pieces on the aft deck. Looking in to see what was going on, we realised that when it came to the ultimate in floating sheds, this was it - the whole interior of the boat looked abominable, stuff lying around, filth and muck everywhere and, surprisingly, a lady below who we never saw emerge. Indulging in a little chit-chat with the guy, he asked us where we were from, we asked him, and were amazed to hear that this was his first port of call from USA. He was clearly British, so presumably had taken the boat out there previously. Personally I wouldn't have even launched it - but it takes all sorts!

Another time we were in a friend's boat for a long weekend sail around the IOM. Arriving in Douglas we prepared to raft against a motor boat on the outside pontoons, but saw that it had a beautifully engraved notice on the outboard side saying "no mooring". We were fully prepared to ignore it, but unfortunately the owner was aboard and utterly refused to allow us against him. He turned out to be the Commodore of the IOM or Douglas Motor Boat Club. Enuff said.

We went on the other raft, which had as its outside craft an extremely tatty, unoccupied open boat moored to its neighbour with 6mm blue polypropylene line. It took quite some time to get ourselves, 34 ft, inside it without landing on the other raft.

Next morning we were away early but before leaving, very quietly, moved the open boat alongside the motor boat and tied the polypropylene warps in as many unapproved knots as possible, ensuring that they were all as tight as possible in the interests of security.

Re: Almost entered the fray

Oh! You sneaky little monkey so it was you Eh! Commodore of the Douglas MBC here!......... seriously though, the same thing happened to me at the same pontoon, not the same boat, the guy wouldnt let me on the outside of him, because I was too big, then refused to move so I could come inside. I tied up to a trawler tied to the quay! (checked with harbour master) Never did get my own back, but what the hell, some people are just like that, stuff them! Had a nice pint in the yacht club along the quay, very friendly bunch!

Re: Almost entered the fray

You lot following me round then. Though I was the only one to discover IOM and Strangford. Thought I was Iivingston. And put a plack on them. Didn't know others had got there!!

No one can force me to come here-----------

Re: Almost entered the fray

Bumped into IOM aon my way to Ireland, used to go there for the TT races, but didn't think it was in the middle of the sea, was always too pisssed on the ferry! Thought it was down the road from Fleetwood!

Not only do you

have to put up with lousy weather over there, but you also have to raft up to inconsiderate, noisy strangers who might have smelly, barking dogs aboard! Sounds like hell to me :-)
