Hey Aidy, thanks for that, was looking originally to buy a 31mk2 but have viewed a very tidy S31 today and very tempted...1996 and asking £52K was thinking more around the £48K mark..maybe worth a try??

A mere 10% reduced offer would take you below£48K so no problem with that, brokers would be expecting at least that. I'd be starting around 20-25% less. What have you got to lose? If you go in and offer £48K they would probably want to meet you in the middle.

Is In dreams sold?

My friend has an S31.

It is a super boat, sails well, he usually sails single handed even putting up spinaker single handed.

Lots of accomodation, the aft cabin would sleep an army.

For that money you should be able to get a 336 which really is a good boat. Always thought the S31 was a mediocre attempt by Moody to ape the French boats then putting them under pressure.

I spent most of 2009 searching for a s/h boat. I can assure you the market has been very tight. If you are open minded (prepared to accept a less popular or tatty boat requiring work) there are deals to be done. If you want a popular boat that sails well in top condition there is a significant shortage. I had a number of really good offers turned down over the summer (within 10% of the asking price and backed up by the need for essential spend)..... and in many cases the boats sold within a few weeks (presumabley very close to the asking price) so that were right to turn my offer down. The situation is not helped by disreputable brokers suggesting a new sprayhood canvas is £300, a standing / running rig change is £700 and a saildrive gaiter replacement is £500. I did begin to wonder if a better strategy would be to make an high offer and then negotiate a reduction on the basis of the surveyor report ..... but you waste a survey if the seller still won't move on price

S31

Happy owner of a S31 with wheel, I can echo the positive feedback.
Very good performance in medium to strong winds - after some mods to aft-stay and genoa cars.
Behaves reasonably in high seas when taking into account the broad/flat bottom.
Roomy and practical inside.

If you want to sail single-handed make avoid wheel steering, badly positioned genoa and main sheeting (unless you modify).

Points to check:
-PRV water collection, else you have a wet bilge all the time
-cabin window leakage, unscrew the most bottom aft screw and watch for water coming out
-cracks between deck and coachroof
-corrosion of stanchion pods

good luck

PRV water collection?

I know this one !

Its the Pressure Relief Valve on the hot water tank.

When the water gets hot in the tank, it expands, and the PRV opens. The released water just dribbles into the bilges.

The solution is to have some form of collection bottle or to pipe it overboard via a skin fitting.

But I am still worried about where my scepter pods might be, especially if they are corroding away !

Sailed one in Croatia with Neilson,
Nice mannered boat with plenty of space and fairly well fitted out. A touch heavier on the helm than we were used to but pretty sound otherwise. I'm a tiller rather than a wheel person- but I think both options exist.

I bought the first S31 off the production line. I kept the boat for 8 years then sold her for the same price I paid.

I fitted a skin fitting to drain the hot water expansion. Being the first boat I suggested to Moodys to fit all boats similar. Water slopping in the bilges can only be a poor thing. They did not take up the advice!

I never liked the galley pump, (the gulper) as we called it. You have to pump out water from the galley sink.

Reefing was early, top end of force 3 otherwise you got a lot of weather helm. 2nd reef was top end of 4.

Look at the tiller carefully. They are laminated together. Rain water runs down the tiller and collects at the base. This area can de laminate.

Sailing is excellent. Often single handed. Definitely recommend one. They are popular boats and think about reselling.

As extras, we fitted port holes on the hull to the saloon and aft cabin. Well worth the extra expense!

Are you Sure ??? You did well then... I bought in 1996 list price was about 65K with a few extras .... I still have the price list and broscure for the S31 and S38.... the going price when i sold in 2003 was about 54 - 52K

My boat was 1994. She was originally called Moody Mania and was the demo boat. We were discounted 12% for the demo boat.
We paid under 50k but I can not remember the exact figure.

If you still have the brochure, the photos are of my boat. Note the pushpit is connected with 8 ply rope. Later boats had stainless wire on the pushpit.
