Moody 422 fin keel…. Can I dry her out?

Ahoy there! I’ve just bought a Moody 422 fin keel yacht, and I’m wondering if she is able to take the ground, if I was to dry her out alongside the wall in a drying harbour?
I’m no stranger to drying fin keel boats to the wall, so I know what to do, but that is to boats I know that are capable of drying out.
Can anybody give me an idea if she’s able to? It’ll only be for a tide or two so I can scrub her bottom and anti foul

Are you a member of the MOA? (Moody Owners Association) you will get your answer almost immediately, very reasonable cost with lots of info. I have a Moody 33mk2 but not familiar with the Moody 422 but I guess it will be fine drying out.

Most yachts at some time sit on a cradle, or a series of acrows with the weight of the yacht taken by the keel. The cradle or acrows simply stop the yacht falling over and take little of the weight.

Like all Moodys of that era, longish low aspect ratio fin keel with a straight (and wide) bottom so no problem drying leaning against a wall or posts. Just take the usual precautions in checking the ground beforehand and taking a line from the masthead to the shore to keep it leaning in.

Of course a Moody 422 can be dried out against a wall. The main thing to avoid is any waves or wash at the critical time of touch down on a hard bottom. Used to dry out on a concrete pad and sometimes wash at that critical moment made it sound terrible.

You will need some sort of water supply to help scrub, or possibly use a dinghy and scrub as the hull becomes exposed. Expect to need a ladder to mask up the waterline and to help apply the paint as it is not fun working above your head. So choose somewhere with a solid bottom and you should be fine.
