To save me going up the mast to measure it, does anyone happen to know the diameter of the forestay on the circa 1996 Moody 38CC? Advice much appreciated.

Why go up the mast? Can you not undo the fixings holding the furling gear to the stemhead and push it up far enough to measure the stay? On my boat that was easy enough to do.
On my boat you can remove the two black plastic plugs one of which is visible in this photo at the base of the furler. The genoa halyard must be slackened first. The Nylock nut holds both furler and forestay, and in the past I have used halyards to secure the rig and removed the forestay in order to have it slightly shortened, as it was made a fraction too long. I had the original bottom fitting cut off, the stay shortened, a new swage fitted and a turnbuckle added so that it could be correctly adjusted. My furler has two black plastic plugs that you just turn 90 degrees and pull out, after which the furler lifts off the two stainless straps, and can be pushed up far enough to reveal the turnbuckle and the bottom of the stay.

EDIT: I got this a bit wrong at first, because I had remembered removing the nylock nut and bolt. Don't do that unless the rig is secured!
