i`m looking to move up a metre or so and quite fancy a moody 29. it seems to have most of the creature comforts to which the crew aspires and being designed by angus primrose should, one would think, sail quite well too. i have all the basic specs off the moody website. there are no rcd cat or stability curves for a boat of this age. i can find no test reports or mention on this forum.
the boat would mainly be used for cruising on the west coast of scotland with perhaps the odd jaunt further afield.
any views from those with experience of the model would be much appreciated.

hi if you are looking for a boat go out and try a few in your price range. and wait a day on here and im sure the boys that side will help you a bit more than s dog as i have no knowledge of boats your side as i have only boughtaussie boats if you could fined a allan payne over there i would recomened that he was the guy who did gretel 1 and 2 for the americas cup i have h is very first boat built in steel in aussie in 19 39 and shes still great to sail in any weather.done a few sydney to hobarts in her time. anyway happy hunting,,,,regards dave

Thats a real cop out - state that there are better boats at half the price and then refuse to justify the statement.

IMHO it doesnt have enough hulls, but the moody does fill a definite corner in the market.

most boats are overpriced imo, the moody 29 does not appear to rated good, bad or indifferent anywhere in print which is why i`m asking here.
one of the other contenders was the leisure 29 - any views on that ?

I agree that all boats should be half the price that they sell for - until you come to sell your own!!!

I test sailed a Leisure 29 about 7 years ago. Admittedly it was quite light airs, but didn't perform very well. Layout below was distinctly 1970's - it still had original vinyl cushion covers and engine etc.

I've seen - but never sailed - Moody 29's around and seem to be popular up here. There was one at Kip for sail recently. The person who bought my last boat was considering between the Jeanneau Rush 30 (mine) and the Moody 29. The Rush was bought - he said it was just that bit more modern.

As for use on the Clyde, West Coast - and a bit further afield, I wouldn't hesitate in choosing the Moody 29.

Regards

Donald

good points : strongly built;roomy ; safe;
bad points: not overcanvassed needs a blow to get going;70'sdated look external and interior.
i chartererd one years ago and ws v pleased . depends on what you want. if a roomy dependable safe boat then look for a well cared for example. dont get a cheap one as you will spend much more doing it up.

Have a look at a contessa 28/32 I don't own one but it was my first choice. However I still like what I have now.

Although not quite the same, I chartered a Moody 31 from Dunstaffnage approx 10 years ago.
I liked it and would definately put it on my list, I would guess that the 29 wouldn't be that disimilar.
During the sail off the west coast we had F7 and F8's which the
Moody stood up to well....

Wouldn't recommend a Twister if you're after a caravan. However, you might be interested in a Sadler 29. I don't think they're quite as spacious as the Moody, but IMHO, it's a far better sailing boat.

Don't know what age of boat your looking at but all my money is in a Westerly and I've never seen anything in my price rang to tempt me away. The Moodys we looked at for about the same price where not as suitable, for us, as a Westerly

Sadler 29s

I have sailed quite a bit in both fin and bilge keel versions of the Sadler 29.

Although the bilge keel version has all the advantages of shallow draught, if that isn't essential to you, I would very much recommend the fin keel version as it's far superior when beating and feels safer in a blow!

What about a beautiful (to some) AWB like a Beneteau 285/305/310? 60% of the price and I have never heard of one breaking up at sea. Can overhaul similar length Moodys easily and better accomodation. Might be a bit uncomfortable in a high sea state but VERY few people venture out in such conditions. Like everyone else, I am biased but can honestly say I have no regrets going for the Vauxhall Cavalier of the boating world.

Had 1 westerly and 2 moodys, before we bought the last moody, looked at everything from sadlers, jeaneau's, benetau's and indeed westerlys again, travelled from Plymouth to Kip marina via Lymington and the Hamble, ended up buying a moody again but certainly did not intend to.
Why?
Space, very well built, the one we bought at Kip was in superb condition for a 1987 boat, pretty good sailing ability, would be better if the sails were newer, I cross the North sea every year so I want something I can feel confident in, loads of proper wood, I was put off by the sheer amount of plastic and that bloody awful smell below in the dufor/ben/jen/bav compared with the much older (for the same money) moody

many thanks to all who replied - some interesting material to be digested.
the dated looks of the 29 will pale into insignificance when set against my own sell by date.
while i don`t particularly want to buy a "caravan" the decision is not entirely down to me. i did look at a sadler 29 and thought it was a tidy boat but as has been said not quite as roomy as the moody. year for year they both seem to be similar in asking prices.
i also looked at a westerly but for various reasons decided against.
DJE thanks for the link to MOA, i`ll trawl thro` that for a bit.

It's not a cop out it's just that I've already made my case so I felt it better to let others agree with my correct statements and suggest boats to suit.

moody 29s were built between 1980 and 1983 and probably sell for between 22k and 27k. i`d love a boat twice as good for 13k - i can appreciate why you would want to keep the identity of such a boat to yourself.
pm me with the make and model ( i promise i won`t tell anyone ) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
