We're looking to move up from our 22 footer and quite like the Moody 28 - but there aren't many around.
We are looking for a dryish cruising boat that can be sailed shorthanded (preferably bilge keeled). We are a family of 4 (+dog) and like roominess down below.
Does anyone have any good ideas of similar boats - up to 32ft & £35K

many thanks

Try something slightly larger - Westerly Konsort and Fulmar , Moody 31 , Sadler 29 and 32. All have bilge keel models and all can be bought with your existing budget. Don't forget to keep about 10% of your budget for repairs etc.

I've been told that a Westerley Merlin is the same boat, though I've not confirmed it myself.

I would suggest a Colvic Countess which is probably the highest volume 28 footer you can get,but which is a good sailing boat and usually with bilge keels with attreibutessimilar to a Westerley Konsort but at least £10000 less. Am I prejudiced Yes,I have just moved up to one from a Colvic 26 Sailor which was also an excellent boat.Ourpreviou boat was a 22 footer. a Hurley 22 which we have fond memories of .Another boat to look for would be a Cobra 850.Lots of room and good performance. A great many of Countesses and Cobras were home completions but some of these are excellent.

I have just sold an early Moody 31 at £32,500, and there are a few more around at an asking price of £34k - £35k. Great family cruisers, and one of the earliest with the layout of today's 30' - 32', namely aft heads compartment and "double" aft cabin. Have a look at www.yacht-goldeneye.co.uk for lots of pics.

Upsides - space, solid construction, simple handling, overengined
Downsides - bilge keeler not a great performer
