Mobile phones in East Coast area.

I've had my phone nicked and would appreciate some advice on a replacement please.
It was a Samsung Galaxy S on O2, coming near the end of contract.
I'm considering a Samsung SIII on Giff Gaff, but as they use O2, I'm not sure as I've been a bit disappointed with O2 coverage in east coast areas [i.e. usually none]
Any recommendations or pitfalls to avoid please?
It all looked simple until I get down to details like Goodybags, Gigabags etc.:confused:

I am on 3 & have been for 10 yrs, coverage no probs & they are generally the best deals.
i use the Galaxy Ace & can tether & that is a real bonus
 
Out and about in many typical East Coast venues last year, we had T-Mobile, 3, and O2 in use on various devices. All worked pretty well everywhere, but it was noticeable that T-Mobile was the one that most consistently got a 3G signal. But I guess these circumstances change over time as new aerials get commissioned etc.

Orford & further up the Adle used to be tricky, didnt visit last yr so no up to date info

Wasn't able to get a signal with '3' at Orford (laptop with dongle) and the Vodafone coverage was rather patchy but no problems with either on the moorings up by Aldebrugh.

Otherwise I can only think of the hole in Vodafone coverage between Swin Spitway and the Sunken Buxey.
 
On EE (ex-Orange) and haven't found anywhere yet where I haven't had a signal. Galaxy Note on Panther very effective setup which I'm delighted with
 
I live in West Suffolk, boat's in Ipswich/Pin Mill. Vodaphone has been consistently reliable. Wife has O2 and dances around the house shaking her phone at the windows in a desperate attempt to receive texts or calls. Very annoying indeed
 
I'm on 3 and get unlimited data and tethering to my ipad included with a good enough 3g signal to watch Catchup TV on my Ipad on the Orwell (but not the Stour!)

3 is better than my old O2 for coverage in most of my sailing haunts.

A 3G or at the least an "Edge" signal is needed for data connection for weather etc. Just a phone signal is pretty much available anywhere these days. Wells NTS was a bit pants though!

I've noticed some ladies on some Freesat channels shaking their phones at the camera but never understood why.
So they're trying to get a signal?:D
 
The worst place on orange was BRadwell as the nearest phone mast is on West Mersea. Ok elsewhere.

Part of the equation has to cost. My iPhone is now on T-mobile and for £31 a month I get 2000 mins of calls and unlimited texts and data. For that I can put up with a few dead spots.
 
Been on T-Mobile for 4 years now - much better coverage since the merge with Orange.

UK tarifs very good - still on an old plan at £15 for 300 mobile mins, 300 texts, Unlimited landline (excludes 0800 and 0845) and 750MB data. If you talk nicely to them, you might get them to throw in 30 minutes of inclusive 0800/0845/0870 which helps. If they don't, there are some useful apps based on the saynoto0870 such as 08Wizard etc to try and reroute those 0845/0870 numbers to standard landline numbers.

On the downside, T-Mobile is very much a UK/EU orientated supplier. If you go outside the EU (including Switzerland) then there seem to be no boosters to reduce call charges unless perhaps you have a business account (Switzerland for example is an eye watering £1.50 per min to receive calls). I have kept an old phone which I got unlocked at a local market stall for £12 so I can use any SIM when abroad.
 
Well, I take it all back.
I assumed that I would never see my Galaxy again, but Thames Clippers have just emailed to say it's been handed in, so I was wrong to assume it was stolen, just my carelessness:o
Meanwhile I went and bought a new phone on Vodaphone and plan to swap it onto 3 when the credit runs out.
So I should be able to do a bit of ad-hoc research later.
