12 miles from Walton might put him well out of range of his VHF? Plenty shallows out from Frinton/Holland. When CG think use of mobile inappropriate, they often say so, with usual homily, but not this time ...

Fair point..... and indeed there is some treacherous water out there.... But it was reported elsewhere that they didn't have a VHF.....

Also, Walton is a major CG VHF repeater, so I would have thought that they would have the most sensitive of receiving equipment there?

Sorry Para, Thames at Walton are more than capable of talking to you in Ostend and that's about 70nm away.....as I have had occasion to find out!

It may simply be water over the batteries. No battery, no VHF.

Our family have carried a VHF on our yacht for 10yrs and have never used it once, now i have mobile and VHF if I was to get in trouble i would try the mobile first if no success i would then use the VHF
