I have a SH GX2100 radio, as it's a fairly common radio, it's possible someone has an answer, otherwise I'll ask SH. I think this may be interesting to other radios as well.

The above radio has the possibility of "navigating to a waypoint". The wp can be manual input, but it can also be automatic: one example is when the radio receives a distress call, there is the possibility to input the received position as a wp and navigate towards that point (the screen indicates bearing and distance).

The manual says "when the radio receives the distress call from another radio... (etc etc)", it does not say if the same can be done with a distress call from our own boat.
Example: MOB, send distress call, the position of the vessel/casualty is then treated as a waypoint.

Does anyone know if this is possible, that is: if I send a distress call, will the coordinates being sent by the mayday be available as waypoint in the radio ? Now that I have a remote microphone in the cockpit, that would avoid having to go at the chart table to push the MOB button on the fixed GPS (I have no plotter in the cockpit).

It seems unlikely to me that it would work like that. I understand what you're suggesting, but I doubt it occurred to SH's programmers.

Is it not covered by the NMEA 0183 DSE and DSC sentences it outputs? That was my impression, but I haven't integrated them yet, so can't confirm it.

My understanding is that those sentences are more or less a copy of what was received on ch70. I doubt that it will generate and output them when sending a distress alert of its own.

You may well be right. I'd still expect there to be some feature for it to log outgoing distress signals on an external system. The radio might well be used by larger trawlers (at least those approaching the 24m limit) which might also have the need to log such info. I guess there's no easy way to test. :)

Question for SH I suppose.

I also have a GX2100 and as you say it can be used to navigate to a way point from a received distress call.

If you send a distress call the way the receiving radio works depends if that redio has been programmed in the same way as the SH GX2100, 2150 and 2200 radios.

The GX2100 can output the distress message in NMES 0183 format and if your chart plotter can decode the messages it will display the posiion on the chart plotter. I run OpenCPN and on my next visit to my boat will be trying that out but will need some way that will allow me to receive a test distress message without upsetting our port authority.

The logging of an outgoing distress message on your own plotter again depends on the plotter software. My SIMRAD has an input for a MOB button and OpenCPN has a screen button. I don't know if there is a way an external push button can be connected to OpenCPN but I wist to find out so I can connect Angus's Crew watcher output to OpenCPN and the various MOB buttons I have around the boat.

Sure, but this doesn't answer the OP's question. He wants his own radio, when he transmits the alert, to behave as if it had just received its own message.

Have to say, this does seem like a bit of a back-arsewards way of implementing a cockpit MOB button.

It doesn't look (from the manual) as though Distress works in the way you describe.

If you're using the CMP30, you can add the waypoint from the mic
