I’ve just found out that my boats mmsi number doesn’t exist. I have both handheld and ships radio programmed with the number that came with the boat but after searching ready to fit AIS, the number and call sign aren’t recognised. Why?

The previous owner followed instructions and on selling the vessel deregistered the boat in his name. On purchase you needed to register the boat with Ofcom to obtain the licence for the radio and call sign and also the MMSI number for GMDSS \you may also want to register the boat on SSR or Part 1 Ships register.

Ofcom are relatively easy to deal with .

If you get stuck, you can call them and surprisingly, you get to speak to very helpful and knowledgeable people, they set mine up guiding me through the process whilst on the phone to them.

Very impressed with the service.

I’m already registered with the handheld and fixed vhf. But no note of my mmsi or call sign online although I have a letter from Ofcom showing all the details.

Big changes made here - Appears Ship registers being merged and am being forced to re-register all details, download various docs etc etc for SSR re-registration, plus pay an extra £10 for the privilege.

You have possibly misunderstood what you were told. If your boat was previously registered Part1 then it would have had a Tonnage survey which would have resulted in the previous owner receiving a Tonnage certificate/ Carving Notice. and an Official number possibly a six digit number. This number and the Tonnage weight should be displayed as instructed on the vessel. Sometimes a carved wooden plaque. or brass plate. You might not require a tonnage survey if you can convince the authorities that there have been no structural changes to the boat. The only thing you may need to consider regarding Part 1 and SSR is the cost as for many purposes SSR fulfils similar requirements and where it costs about £175 to register on part 1 with a renewal every 5 years SSR costs around £35. If the previous registration was SSR then there should be an SSR number displayed on the outside of the boat.

I have just spoken to my fellow welsh man at the registration office and it was confirmed that no pressure should be put on you over choice. After all the £ 175 buys more tea and digestive biscuits.... (My words not his but similar sentiments.)

SSR is in the same building and it seems duties may be shared.

Yes the system appears to be updated when I renewed last year, the docs are relatively simple and should make it easier next time. I did have an issue with payment but a quick phone call and the very helpful lady sorted it all in seconds.
not really a big deal for me though

Not misunderstood - new procedure for SSR renewal is a lot more involved and £10 more.
