Planning to sell my boat which has a DSC vhf installed. New buyer is obviously going to expect a vhf so can I simply transfer the mmsi to him by phoning (more likely writing in quadruplicate) to offcom?

And what happens if he doesnt have the correct license - you cant change or remove the mmsi from the set without sending back to the maker. but thats not really an issue for me, is it? thats for the new owner. but what if he doesnt bother to get the license or to change the mmsi over? surely thats offcoms problem.

I suppose what I am asking is whether DSC radios with mmsi nos can only be sold to licensed users, like you can only sell a shotgun to someone with the correct license, and whether the practise is for the new owner to keep the old mmsi or for the old owner to keep it and the set to be re-programmed.

and if we transfer the mmsi number what about the epirb that I will be keeping.

So the simple answers are:

The MMSI (and callsign) is an Identity for the boat and goes with it.

It is up to the new owner to apply for a Ship Radio Licence in their own name. However you cover yourself by filling in the "Licence No Longer Required" part of your licence.

If your EPIRB has the MMSI number of the old boat programmed it will need to be re- programmed with the MMSI number of your newly acquired boat.

hope this helps.

Excellent - thanks for your help. Only minor prob is that I have applied the license disk to the boat and junked all the other bumph, but I'm sure a letter will suffice.

The Epirb isnt programmed with the mmsi - it simply seems to be an association between the epirb id no and the mmsi on the epirb database. So that should be easy to change.
