Mizzen boom shortening

I would very much appreciate any advice re shortening my mizzen boom by about 12 " because I am thinking about getting a self steering device - hydrovane.

Has anybody done this if so which end did they shorten.

Out board end usually less cut aways and sheaves etc.

Surely you'd cut the middle out at 1:8 or more and scarph it?

Much less fiddly, unless you suspect any rot in either end.

Yes, go with cutting outer (clew end) end off. Just make sure it is a solid boom which it most likely is beforehand though.
