Missing yachtswoman in South west.

Some very odd circumstances to this. As per Searush I'm wondering if it was some kind of suicide mission

Lets be clear this was not setting sail in a F8 unless I am very much mistaken

It was perfectly reasonable weather and a perfectly reasonable passage for someone who knew what they were doing.

I am of a similar mind to OldBilbo, ie caught by a pot and set onto rocks before clearing or a miscalculation in clearing the shore. I would have to see a lot more evidence before inferring that this was other than a very tragic accident.

Lets hope she still turns up and this wreckage is a red herring

From the report in the Telegraph, this is sounding very fishy to me?

"Mrs Unwin, 65, had remarried her millionaire husband Carol, 61, just days before he bought her the second-hand 31ft yacht with a banker’s draft on Thursday"

So husband buys you a boat and doesn't join you to bring it home??
And they have only been married 10 days??

What kind of husband (new or otherwise) buys a boat and then lets you bring it home???

"It is thought her husband had driven home to Devon and was waiting for her but she never arrived and he raised the alarm"

So he has driven her down to the boat to collect it as well and then driven back home!!
Didn't he think to advise her not to do it (or at least get someone to go with her)
There would be NO WAY I would even let my wife buy a secondhand car without going with her to check it and then follow her home in case of problems.

I'm very suspicious.

One who has no interest in sailing?

Nobody would think it odd if a wife had driven her husband to collect the boat, and then driven home to wait for him. What's the difference here? Couples in which the wife loves sailing and the husband does not seem to be less common, but they do exist (my parents, for one).

Hmmm, it is interesting when you read that article, isn't it? Why does a millionaire buy a small, thirty-odd year old boat for around £30k?

a full EIGHT out of the west and rough !
(

Have you got a source for that? Just checked a GRIB file I downloaded Sat afternoon and it has 10 Knots falling to 7 Knots for Sat eve at Lands End and falling further during the wee small hours. Even adding a fiddle factor for GRIB underestimating winds around an exposed headland wouldn't make it that bad.

Of course a forecast is only a forecast but it's more likely that there were calm patches causing her to motor rather than a full gale.

Cos it's what she wanted & thought she could handle solo? Perhaps it was all he was prepared to pay for as a wedding present the second time around.

Mmmm, I was going to suggest an alternative explanation, but this is probably not the time or place...

Cos it was/is a nice boat at an appropriate price. You don't get to be a millionaire by throwing money away do ya... And anyway, a million isn't really that much these days is it?

I've just read that she left at 6.45 pm, so a night sail on the same day as she buys the boat. Unbelievable. Apperently the broker and sailing school told her not to leave because of bad weather.

While I can understand people wanting to speculate, there seems some pretty wild suggestions coming out on this thread. I wonder is this the time or the place, my thoughts are with the family and friends

"Dad was drowned. We got him a wreath like a lifebelt. It’s what he would have wanted."

The +1 is slightly ironic, given your signature!

The woman may be a very competent sailor who simply hasn't sailed for a while before she set out, hence the refresher course advise. That doesn't mean she is now incompetent.

I wouldn't want to make any judgement on her decision to sail based on the information so far.

Sigh, that's not the facts

She bought the boat in Falmouth on Thursday, sailed it from there to Mousehole, left there on Saturday evening. The warning seems to have been from a local fisherman who said "I would'nt go round there at night" She said "i'll be fine"

That's the facts as far as I can ascertain (oh and the weather was F4 W or NW decreasing.
