Minehead.Difficult to believe

To be honest I think the council is trying to unload their responsibility of the harbour and hope by running it down so they can break any covenant attached to it and sell it to a developer ( for the required backhander ) maybe even for a £1 like they did another part of the seafront

Whilst I am in agreement with your sentiments, the viability of the 3 or 4 visitors moorings available would have very little effect on the towns finances even if they were to be occupied fully its just too far to walk to the town, maybe the pub and cafe should sponsor the moorings as they are the only beneficiary ;) and they could provide facilities required ( if they don't go bust first ).
Mind you the council would fight that all the way and want about £10,000 pa for the honour
The last sentence of my post was a little light hearted. Having spoken to a couple of people from the council, it was obvious, from the clichés and buzzwords, that they are not interested in anything outside of their own little world. I have pretty much written off any chance of a change.

I did realise (after a while) that you could not be that naive, my town is dying on its feet (again)due to the corrupt management we call WSDF ( West Somerset District Fiefdom ) if they are not corrupt then they must be very inept or even worse. Sound familiar ?

Snouts and troughs. It's the same all over. If the councillors were competent and honest, they would find a far better way of occupying themselves.

I've anchored outside a couple of times, but never been in. If I was ever thinking that I might, this warning has firmly put me off. To be honest, I won't miss Minehead any more than Minehead will miss me.

Its a great shame really,in a westerly wind it can be a pleasant place to spend a few days,in an Easterly be prepared to be banged up and down violently on the hard bottom as the tide ebbs away.

I dont imagine they get many visitors anyway ,charging that much will put off the few that do.

A few years ago Watchet charged £2.60/m for an overnight stay. They reduced this to about £2.00/m, presumably due to lack of visitors. It is now still expensive at £2.14/m which stops some people going but most seem to be like me and go once or twice a year. If you use that as a benchmark, Minehead should be less than £1.00/m. If they were to add pontoons, tidal gate, showers, toilets etc. £1.60-£1.80/m would be fair and attract money spending yachties to the town.

Just suppose that they could then get 20 visitors moorings. At 10m per boat, and used 180 days a year that would yield £65k pa. With maybe one extra person to collect money / provide berthing services that would come back to £20k pa.

And the investment to make a tidal gate and add toilets showers and pontoons? Maybe £10 million - the necessary harbour wall wouldnt come cheap.

Totally unrealistic.

Very recently, there was a proposal to enlarge the harbour to enable a car ferry to run between Minehead and Wales. There was support from the Welsh government and commercial interest, but West Somerset Council apparently rejected it out of hand.

The council can't even put together a fishing party, nevertheless any major project :- swimming pool -gone , information centre -gone, factory units-wrong type, seafront enhancements - OMG !! how many thousands for some metal tubes ( not sure what they supposed to be ??), etc.
And our new area hospital - built on a flood plain ( I know nowt to do with the council :) )

I agree that the council are unlikely to improve the harbour (although they always seem to find plenty of money to pay for their pet projects - including flashy offices) but if they charged realistically, ie on the basis of a drying harbour with no facilities, then they might have some happier customers. Minehead has gone downhill ever since Butlins was built and now seems to want to cater mainly for the chav market. It's a pity as it can be a pleasant place to visit when the chavs are absent.

perhaps we ought to widen the moat round the 'oliday camp, and put a few piranhas and alligators in. They would feed quite well....
