Many years ago we had a gentle summer drift in a calm sea about two miles off the west coast of Shetland. Ahead were two long dark streaks on the surface aligned down wind from the peat covered hills. My first reaction was 'oil slicks', however as we sailed into the first the decks were immediately black with midges, fortunately exhausted. We washed them off with buckets of sea water. Presumably conditions had been ideal for a mass hatching and the light wind down two valleys had carried them out to sea.

Other than that experience I have never been troubled when anchored a sensible distance off, though we did take care to leave any followers behind when rowing back out to the boat.
