I am thinking of buying an MGC 27 (Contessa 27). Does anybody have any info/opinions on these? I will be replacing a Hunter Sonata and using the boat mainly for family sailing with some club racing. MGC seems to have better accomodation than an Impala and the self tacking jib is attractive in theory at least. Any comments on the MGC would be interesting. In particular are there any particular trouble spots to look for and how does the drop keel compare to the fin?

The sailing part of our trials on this boat really stick in the mind. As the Contessa 27 she was one of the best, quickest, sweetest handling boats I had sailed in many years. I sailed a Sonata (lifting keel version) myself in those days, and if I had had the money I would have bought one on the spot.

The accommodation was a bit rudimentary from memory and the MGC27 version was less well built than the Jeremy Rogers Contessas. However, for sporty family sailing, of her type, age and price she is very hard to beat.

Thanks for that, it does sound as if its going to be high on the list. It must say something that it sticks in your mind after this time and in the end, being nice to sail is probably the most important thing as we are likely mainly to be day sailing. With 5 of us, its going to be hard to find something with performance and good accomodation at a decent price. I wondered about a Sigma but I could only afford a tired one so probably better to charter for long hols. Don't seem to be any Contessa for sail at present, presumably a surveyor will pick up any problems with Nothshore built? Simon
