I run a small 60w tube heater next to mine (the cal) that comes on at the same time as the main engine room tube heater and the cabin oil rad. First time I have tried this as I too was worried about the cal and all the pipes around it. It worked a treat and does not cost much more to run. This as well as releasing the pressure by running the taps and leaving them open with the pump off.

I keep two tube heaters on a theromostat in the engine bay, and as Ripster has said, leave the taps open to reduce the risk.

It has worked for me for many years and I don't bother draining the system down as I use the boat during the winter.
