Mercury 700 outboard

Im actually going for this now given all the bad vibes about these engines Johnson 40hp electric start longshaft outboard engine, early 1970's runs very well , will need a full service only problem is the electric start part he1s not selling the loom and key with it so i need to source a cheap one any ideas tried flea bay but there nearly £200 ouch if anyone can help let me know a.s.a.p cheers steve.

A 40 year old engine of any make could cause you some heartache if anything serious goes wrong.

First impressions are that there is still a very good range of spares available for the Johnson probably more than there are for the Merc.

Check the parts lists at, for example, http://www.boats.net/

Boats.net are excellent. But remember their postage to UK, even for a little gasket, is about 40 bucks :)

Not suggesting you would buy from them .. in fact Mercury policy does not allow them to ship genuine Merc parts outside N.America... but the parts lists indicate which parts are still available.

In the UK I'd order Johnson or Evinrude parts from Oakley marine ( aka Outboards-direct) or Willsmarine. Willsmarine are also agents for Mercury while Oakley are agents for Mariner
