Hi, I just picked up a little second hand Mercury 3.3 two stroke to serve as an auxiliary on my Orkney Coastliner.

I was wondering if it is supposed to just 'sit' in its down position without locking? I've linked to a short video below. To tilt it you can simply grab the shaft and lift it up and hold it up with a pin.

The reason I ask is that my main engine (15hp Yahama) locks into the down position so you can't lift it without unlock it.

Thanks.

Correct.. The lip to prevent the outboard lifting, prevents it lifting when you rotate the engine to take you backwards.. (The engine I guess only has forward and neutral gears, hence having to rotate it 180 degrees to go in reverse).

I know it's a bit disconcerting at first, thinking that the outboard will just tilt out of the water when you spin it around... I think the simplicity of the design works quite well really.

Perhaps they should have added something that when you pull the starter cord to start it, it keeps the engine in the down position!

You question has been answered but you should be able to find an owners manual for it at Brunswick Marine in EMEA Download Center - Download Center

New to this forum so forgive errors. I have acquired Merc 3.3 2stroke. Owners manual not overly helpful so can some kind soul here advise me what oil to use in the transmission?
Anyone here have the service manual they would like to share. Where is the best outlet for spares in the UK?

Hello and welcome! :)

As for transmission oil I'm not an expert but the Quicksilver brand seems to be decent: Quicksilver 1 Litre Premium Gearbox GEARLUBE Oil & Pump Kit MARINER Outboard 1L | eBay

Buy the wee tube of quicksilver gear oil. Don’t need the big one or the pump. The wee tube just fits into the lower hole. Squeeze tube until it comes out the upper hole.
